Ataraxie is a Death Doom and Funeral Doom band founded in Rouen in 2000 .

history

Founding years

Ataraxie was founded at the end of 2000 by the singer and bassist Jonathan Théry after the black metal band Reign of Evil broke up. Together with the Reign-of-Evil guitarist Clément as well as drummer Pierre Sénécal and guitarist Sylvain Estève, whom Théry had met through a notice in the Hellion Records store, the band found its first permanent line-up. After appearances in April 2001, Clément left the group in June of the same year and was replaced by Frédéric Patte-Brasseur, again acquired through Hellion Records. In the early years of their activity, Ataraxie built a reputation as a live band. Europe-wide appearances as opening act for Morgion , Mourning Beloveth and Evoken as well as an appearance during the hosting of the second Dutch festival Dutch Doom Days took place before the first official release of the group. Meanwhile, in January 2003, The Other Path, a demo recorded in the studio, was released . Years passed before the first regular publication, which, according to Patte-Brasseur, was due to the unsteady structure of the group. Théry added that the style played by Ataraxie was not very popular at the time and labels that marketed Death Doom wanted a more compatible style closer to Gothic Metal .

“The Gothic Metal genre had the Death Doom scene with all those unbearable 'Beauty-and-the-Beast' bands inspired by Theater of Tragedy , or the slow-playing bands with no Doom or Death -Metal- influences, extremely contaminated. So it was not an easy task to find a label that was seriously interested in Old School Doom Death without releasing selling points like a beautiful singing woman or romantic keyboards. "

- Jonathan Théry

Slow Transcending Agony

The band finally signed a contract with the Japanese Extreme Doom label Weird Truth Productions . The cooperation between Weird Truth and Ataraxie remained long-term. Years after the debut was released, Théry emphasized that it was “an honor to work with such an underground label” and highlighted previous releases by the label. In the meantime, a Death Doom scene developed in the Benelux , to which Ataraxie and the Funeral Doom band Funeralium , which is closely related to this group, belonged. This small scene organized the first concerts and festivals together.

The band then recorded their debut album Slow Transcending Agony , which was released in June 2005, in the summer of 2004 at the CCR Studio in Zulte, Belgium with Kris Belaen, who has worked for Pantheist and No Return , among others . The album was well received internationally and the first margin of 1,000 units was sold out by December of that year. Since then, Slow Transcending Agony has been considered a genre classic. Following the release, the band performed in France and in the European region with other greats from the entire Doom Metal spectrum such as Esoteric , Count Raven , Place of Skulls , Reverend Bizarre , Saturnus or Cult of Luna, and again in 2006 during the festival Dutch Doom Days, on. The festival performance was recorded. A piece played by Ataraxie was released as part of the official festival DVD. The remaining recordings should be used later. However, there was no publication.

Anhédonia

The second studio album, which has been in the works since 2005, was recorded in the same constellation of band, studio and producer in 2007 and released in 2008. The release of Anhédonie was again positively received internationally and was accompanied by further appearances in Europe, including a renewed appearance at the Dutch Doom Days festival and an engagement as the opening act for the death metal band Gojira . In 2007, the group recorded the split album Bethlehems Bastarde with the British death-doom band Imindain . The tribute split album Bethlehems Bastarde , dedicated to the dark metal band Bethlehem , was released in 2009 and led to Théry joining Bethlehem as a singer at short notice in the same year for the recording and release of two split EPs .

For the tenth anniversary of the band, the group decided to re-record the demo The Other Path , and Weird Truth released the extended and newly recorded demo as a double CD compilation Project X with additional live recordings and other pieces . The release was followed by other international appearances, including a concert in Tunisia and an appearance as the headliner of the Doom Over Paris IV festival.

L'Être et la nausée

Due to performances, private commitments of the musicians, engagements in other projects and injury-related absences - drummer Sénécal broke his ankle in an accident - work on the planned third studio album, on which Ataraxie had been writing since 2009, was delayed. Recordings began at the end of 2012 and were completed in July 2013. Ataraxie chose Christophe Marconato's worship studio in the French department of Essonne as the studio. The album was mixed by Sylvain Biguet from Parween . The mastering was left to the American studio The Boiler Room, known for mastering releases by Jay-Z , Nachtmystium and Voivod , among others . In September 2013, L'Être et la nausée was released , which brought the group a large number of positive international reviews and further consolidated the band's status as a constant in Death and Funeral Doom.

Résignés

In 2014 guitarist Estève left Ataraxie and was replaced by Hugo Gaspar from Fatum Elisum . With the new line-up, the group continued to perform internationally and in 2019 released Résignés, an album that was often highly praised, but also rated as mediocre. Résignés was created by Frédéric Patte-Brasseur in the Vault 92 Studio, by Frédéric Gervais in the Henosis Studio and by Sylvain Biguet in the New Retro Sound Sound Studio. Biguet also did the mixing while the mastering was again done by The Boiler Room.

style

The style played by Ataraxia is mostly discussed as Funeral Doom or Death Doom. The band itself describes their music as "Extreme Doom / Death" and names genre-defining performers of Death and Funeral Doom as well as other performers whose work has shaped genres such as Death Metal , Doom Metal and Post-Metal as significant influences. As such influences, the group lists performers like Disembowelment , Thergothon , Candlemass , Trouble , Pentagram , Saint Vitus , Morbid Angel , Autopsy , Incantation , Entombed , Celtic Frost , Mournful Congregation , Evoken , Bethlehem and Neurosis .

Accordingly, the group's music is described by reviewers as a "dark and menacing sounding Funeral Doom and Death Doom that alternates between Doom and Death Metal". The band, however, often uses the interaction of the two guitarists and presents “extremely tortured vocals”. In this mixture the music of Evoken, Bethlehem, Funeralium and Disembowelment can be compared.
