Karl Ludwig August Baumgarth , von Baumgarth since 1873 (born December 14, 1810 in Kaymen, Labiau district , † May 19, 1877 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently in command of the Königsberg fortress .

Life

August was a son of the Prussian Rittmeister Karl Ernst Baumgarth (1780-1846) and his wife Luise, née Weinstein (1786-1865).

Military career

Baumgarth joined the 3rd Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army on November 1, 1827 , in which his father had already served as accounting officer. He was promoted to secondary lieutenant in mid-August 1832 and was commanded to a teaching squadron in 1838/39. By mid-December 1851, Baumgarth rose to Rittmeister and squadron chief and after his promotion to major on June 11, 1858, he was transferred as a regular staff officer to the 1st Uhlan Regiment in Militsch . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War in 1859 he was commander of the mobile 1st Landwehr-Uhlan Regiment. On July 24, 1861, Baumgarth received his own command with the appointment of commander of the Silesian Uhlan Regiment No. 2 in Gleiwitz . On the occasion of the coronation celebrations of King Wilhelm I , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861 , and in mid-March 1864 was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus II. Class with crown. As a colonel , Baumgarth took part in the German War in 1866 . In position à la suite of his regiment, he was commissioned on May 18, 1867, initially with the command of the 1st Cavalry Brigade . On June 13, 1867 he was appointed brigade commander and on June 18, 1869 he was promoted to major general .

During the war against France , Baumgarth led the mobile 2nd Cavalry Brigade in the battles near Vionville , Gravelotte and Beaune-la-Rolande as well as in the battles near Sevigny, Galette, Saint Amand, Villeporcher, and Château-Renault . He carried out the reconnaissance of Tours and received the Iron Cross 2nd class for his work in the enclosure of Metz .

After the peace treaty , Baumgarth took back command of the 1st Cavalry Brigade on May 23, 1871. He was born on January 19, 1873 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. to the hereditary Prussian nobility raised . After his promotion to lieutenant general, he was appointed commander of Königsberg on October 16, 1873. In this position, he received on the occasion of the religious festival in January 1875 the star of Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves and was on 15 April 1875 board for disposition made. He died on May 19, 1877 in Königsberg.

Baumgarth married Pauline Seelmann (1816–1880) on September 16, 1841 in Tilsit . The daughter Marie (* 1842) married Karl von Scheffer († 1904), Prussian captain and gentleman on Schonklitten near Glommen on November 15, 1872.
