Augustus Intelligence is an American IT company that specializes in Artificial Intelligence and was founded in June 2018. The group ( commercial register entries US: 5455792 NY, DE: District Court Munich HRB 251180, FR: 882567373) has its headquarters in New York City and, according to its own information, other locations in Menlo Park (a city in San Mateo County in the US state of California ), in Paris and Munich .

According to Augustus, as a B2B tech company, it develops “end-to-end, vertically integrated solutions for artificial intelligence (AI). They encompass products, services and infrastructure that support companies on their way to using AI. ”The main focus is on computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) techniques .

Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (who was German Defense Minister until his resignation in 2011 ) became a shareholder in Augustus Intelligence in March 2019; two months later he was on the company's board of directors and headed the board's general affairs department . In December 2019, zu Guttenberg fired two senior Augustus employees (Marco Pacelli and Ed Crump) in his New York office, whom the start-up accused of stealing intellectual property, poaching customers and establishing a competing company called Quantum Intelligence. Both then sued the company in a New York court, accusing it of dubious business practices and obfuscation activities. Augustus, in turn, demands compensation from Crump and Pacelli. The start-up led by the 33-year-old German Wolfgang Haupt, which seeks proximity to German politicians such as the former head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) Hans-Georg Maaßen (CDU) and the CDU politician Philipp Amthor , has its headquarters in the One World Trade Center on the same floor as Guttenberg's own consulting and investment firm Spitzberg Partners . According to the news magazine Der Spiegel, there is a connection between the US commercial law firm White & Case and the Augustus Intelligence company. The company documents from Augustus Intelligence suggested this, reported the magazine.

The sole registered managing director is the 34-year-old Dr. Daniel Braun resides in Homburg. The industrial engineer received his doctorate from 2011-2014 at the University of Göttingen and started at Roland Berger in 2015.

The company moved into the focus of the media in June 2020 due to a lobbying affair by the CDU politician Phillipp Amthor . Der Spiegel reported that Amthor wrote a letter to Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) in autumn 2018 asking for political support for the company. At the same time, Amthor received stock options that enabled him to benefit financially from the company's success. On June 19, 2020, the company announced that the company's founder and CEO , Wolfgang Haupt, was temporarily suspending his mandate. The chairmanship of the board of directors will temporarily be taken over by chief legal counsel Ramsey Taylor until the Amthor case has been clarified by an independent investigation.

The Federal Ministry of Transport announced in 2020 that the US company Augustus Intelligence, which had been criticized for the Amthor cause, had contacts with the ministry, but was not supported financially. A spokesman admitted the contacts and stated that the Ministry of Transport had developed an "Action Plan for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence in Mobility" and thus supported the "Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Federal Government". In this context, there were discussions and exchanges with Augustus Intelligence and research institutions, for example on September 26, 2018 in Berlin .
