The observation tower Uetliberg (about 870 u m. M. ) is a 72 meter high steel lattice tower on the Uetliberg , the mountain of Zurich . Geographically, the tower located on the mountain top belongs to the municipality of Stallikon . The tower, visible from afar, is the landmark of Zurich's local mountain and is one of the highest publicly accessible observation towers in Switzerland.

The current observation tower was built in 1990 as a steel framework construction and replaced the previous building from 1894. The tower has an unusual construction with its triangular base and has an open observation platform at a height of 30 meters that can be climbed via 178 steps, which offers a panoramic view of Zurich and the surrounding area the Alps granted. It also serves as a cell phone tower .

Due to its location in the popular local recreation area Uetliberg and as an "extension" of the hotel "Uto Kulm" as well as because of the attractive panoramic view, the observation tower is very popular. About 200 meters away is the 186.7 meter high Uetliberg television tower , with which it forms an “unequal pair”.

The observation tower was open to the public free of charge all year round until the end of June 2015. From July 1, 2015, entry cost two francs . In June 2019 the price was increased to five francs.

Previous construction

The first observation tower was built in 1894 on behalf of Emil Wuhrmann. The engineer Wenzel from Freiburg im Breisgau drew the plans. The construction came from the iron construction company Bosshard & Co. in Näfels, with the construction work being led by engineers Rudolf Wartmann and Karl Löhle. The “iron lookout tower” was 30 meters high; the viewing platform was accessible via a staircase with 167 steps.

In terms of shape, the first observation tower leaned against the Paris Eiffel Tower , the top of which he replicated. The NZZ commented on this in a newspaper article on July 20, 1894: "The sleek iron construction is not at all unpleasant to the eye, you can see the simplified shape of the Eiffel Tower" .

The previous tower was until 1986 under monument protection provided and was then demolished.
