Localization of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland

The TV tower Uetliberg is an 187 meter high transmission tower made of reinforced concrete with a steel tower attachment on the Uetliberg near Zurich . The television tower is used by Swisscom Broadcast to distribute radio and television programs in the Zurich region and is normally not open to the public - guided tours are possible by prior arrangement. In addition, the tower takes over directional radio links for television program feed, professional radio and services for GSM and serves as a measuring station for the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology .

location

The TV tower Uetliberg stands on the mountain of the same name at an altitude of 854  m above sea level. M. in the area of the city of Zurich . A hotel and the 72 meter high Uetliberg observation tower are adjacent . The unevenly high towers form a striking landmark on Zurich's local mountain .

history

Aerial view from 1990. The new transmission tower is almost complete and the old tower is still standing.

The predecessor of today's transmission tower on the Uetliberg was built in 1953 for the first television broadcasts in Switzerland and was 75 meters high. The first VHF radio station ( DRS 2 ) and the first wireless telephony connection in Switzerland were commissioned as early as 1956 . The second VHF transmitter ( DRS 1 ) followed in 1964 and the television programs TSR and TSI in 1969. A new building followed just five years later. In 1968 the tower was increased to 132 meters and in 1983 a 50 meter high additional tower was added for the local radio stations Radio 24 and Energy Zurich as well as for the state broadcaster DRS 3 .

In 1987 construction began on the new tower, which began operation in May 1990. The construction costs amounted to around eleven million Swiss francs . In 1999 digital audio broadcasting went into operation and in 2003 the GSM system was installed. On the night of May 26, 2004, an arson attack was carried out on the transmission tower. The smoldering fire caused a loss of millions and led to the broadcasting of the two Swiss state television programs being interrupted. After the broadcast of digital television ( DVB-T ) was started in 2006, the analog television program was switched off in 2007. A year later, the digital video broadcasting handheld went into operation. DVB-H operation ended on March 23, 2010, DVB-T operation on June 3, 2019.

description

The directional antennae can be seen inside the tower cage

The 11 meter deep foundation with a diameter of 16 meters weighs 2250 tons, the concrete shaft 2050, the steel top 240 and the GRP tip 6 tons. There are rooms for telecommunication systems in the underground cellar. The total height of 186.7 meters is divided into a three-beam concrete shaft with 55.2 meters, a steel tube attachment of 111 and a top section made of GRP with a length of 20.5 meters. The diameter of the tubular steel attachment tapers from 3.2 to 1.6 meters.

At a height of 46.4 meters there is a single-storey operating pulpit , the facade of which is clad with polycarbonate panes. The tower cage is in the shape of an inverted truncated cone that tapers from 13.95 to 12.80 meters. Around 140 tons of steel reinforcement were used in the reinforced concrete. The tower also contains 54 kilometers of pre-tensioning wire with a diameter of 7 millimeters. The total weight is around 4550 tons.

At the assumed maximum wind speed of 220 kilometers per hour, the tip fluctuates up to 2.2 meters from the vertical. The engineers and architects came from Schindler & Schindler, Zurich (today Schindler & Partner), the construction work was the responsibility of Brunner Erben .

Range and performance

The Uetliberg television tower covers the greater Zurich area , the Limmattal , the Knonaueramt and parts of the Glatttal . To a lesser extent, villages in the Zurich Oberland in the direction of Effretikon are also supplied with the transmission power. The antenna output varies between 10 watts and 55 kilowatts. The energy consumption of the system is over 700,000 kilowatt hours per year. The transmitter in Felsenegg has radio links to eight transmitters in Switzerland and one in Germany.
