The Essen-Ost motorway triangle (abbreviation: AD Essen-Ost ; short form: Essen-Ost triangle ) is a motorway triangle in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region . It connects the federal highway 40 ( Ruhrschnellweg ) with the federal highway 52 ( Mönchengladbach - Marl ).
geography
The motorway triangle is in the city of Essen . The closest districts are Huttrop , Frillendorf , Südviertel , Südostviertel and Ostviertel . It is located about 1.5 km east of Essen city center, about 30 km northeast of Düsseldorf and about 13 km west of Bochum . To the north, the Dortmund-Duisburg railway crosses the triangle and is crossed by a bridge from the A 40.
The Essen-Ost motorway triangle has junction number 25 on the A 40 and number 31 on the A 52.
history
At the Essen-Ost motorway triangle, the A 52 coming from Düsseldorf joins the Ruhrschnellweg (A 40). This section of the A 52 from Essen-Rüttenscheid was opened to traffic in 1981.
For several years it has been planned that the A 52 will be extended in a northerly direction to the A 42 or A 2 (southern urban area of Gladbeck ). By closing the gap, the A 52 between Essen and A 2 would be passable as a continuous motorway. With this planned construction, this motorway triangle would then be expanded into a motorway junction.
Design and state of development
Due to the chosen design as a motorway fork , only the Düsseldorf - Bochum routes and vice versa are served. The Duisburg- Düsseldorf routes are served exclusively by AS Essen-Frillendorf a few 100 meters east of the triangle. When there is a high volume of traffic there is a focus of traffic jams and accidents. To relieve the traffic, a new, more efficient junction will be built further east on Schönscheidtstrasse by 2020.
The connecting ramp from the A 52 to the A 40 is single-lane and limited to 80 km / h. With this lane, the A 40 in the direction of Bochum becomes a total of six lanes. In the opposite direction, the right of the three lanes goes west into the A 52. The A 40 is limited to 100 km / h in both directions as standard, but can be adapted to traffic using automatic gantries . Both ramps will be expanded into two lanes. The renovation work at the Essen-Ost triangle was originally planned for 2016/2017. There were complaints from citizens against the expansion. If these are rejected, the renovation can begin in 2021.
Traffic volume
The triangle was used by around 120,000 vehicles every day in 2010.
