Different sizes, years and engine strengths - the car orchestra as a cross-section through time and a mirror of different vehicle types: including rarities and peculiarities of automotive history, such as the patent motor car number 1 from 1886, a De Dion-Bouton from 1908, a Maserati GranTurismo from 2009 , a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano from 2007, a Lanz Bulldog "Ackerluft", a 230 HP Ford Thunderbird , a Trabi , a Goggomobil , a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, the Messerschmitt Tiger cabin scooter , a Jaguar WildCat, a Citroën 2CV , a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a Mercedes-Benz Actros , as well as a Porsche 356 and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS .

premiere

Before the premiere , the composer Marios Joannou Elia handed and m: Co Managing Director Michel Maugé officially the Baden-Württemberg Minister President Winfried Kretschmann and the Mannheim Mayor Peter Kurz , the score of "autosymphonic".

80 automobiles as "musical instruments", the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg with its percussion octet, the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart , the children's choir of the Stuttgart State Opera , the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg , 120 young people from Mannheim and the pop band Söhne Mannheims found themselves on the 65,000 square meters of Friedrichsplatz in the city to form a unique orchestra.

For the premiere of the Elia Opus, the central square of Mannheim, Friedrichsplatz , was transformed into an amphitheater . An elaborate stage provided space for the choir and orchestra . Across from it, the car orchestra was largely placed on the covered pergola of the facility. The optically closed form was continued in terms of sound technology, a total of 168 large sound systems were used. Thanks to a 360-degree arrangement, impressive sound wanderings were possible. Since the audience was in the center of this circle, the sounds could be heard from every seat.

The symphony was staged with a video and laser show by the Mannheim photographer and video artist Horst Hamann . For his video and laser projections of photos, films and texts, he used the architectural features of Friedrichplatz: The facades of the Art Nouveau buildings in the area function as a 360-degree panorama screen. Almost 20,000 spectators saw the one-hour world premiere of the work. The "autosymphonic" was the climax and the end of the Baden-Württemberg "Automobile Summer 2011".
