Car orchestra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The world's first car orchestra is the invention of the Cypriot composer Marios Joannou Elia . The world premiere took place on Friedrichsplatz Mannheim in September 2011.

occupation

The car orchestra consists of 80 automobiles , which are played like instruments by 120 percussionists . The car orchestra is one of the orchestras of the Elias open-air multimedia symphony " autosymphonic " - in addition to a symphony orchestra, two choirs, a pop band, a vocal ensemble, a percussion ensemble and the live electronics.

backgrounds

Elia spoke about his goal of creating the car orchestra in an interview in Welt am Sonntag (2008): “My dream is a whole symphony orchestra made of cars.” Since 2003 he has been using various vehicles as instruments in his music (see “The vehicles -Cycle").

Autocasting and creation

Marios Joannou Elia “cast” over 120 vehicles throughout Germany within ten months . After each casting , he assessed the sounds and classified them according to their properties. Using specially developed software, he determined the pitch and range in order to be able to combine the sounds with instruments and voices. The composer incorporated a total of 800 different car sounds into his work "autosymphonic".

The 'players' of the car orchestra

"Playing" the cars was done by 120 young people from Mannheim from grades 7 to 13. They were selected in six auditions at Mannheim schools and prepared for their performance in percussion workshops held by the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg for a year.

Contributing vehicles

The choice of vehicle types was broad: trucks , buses , vintage cars , modern limousines , super sports cars , tractors , NASCAR racing cars.
