Axolotl Overkill is a German film drama by Helene Hegemann , which celebrated its world premiere on January 20, 2017 as part of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition of the Sundance Film Festival . Hegemann took over the direction and also wrote the script adaptation of her debut novel Axolotl Roadkill from 2010 for the film .
action

The 16-year-old Mifti is the daughter of a rich father and has lived in a shared apartment in Berlin with her older half-siblings Annika and Edmond since her mother's death . There she leads a party life, skips school and comes into contact with sex and - also because of her drug addict friend Ophelia - with drugs early on . The adults she encounters all seem frustrated, desperate, or obsessed with things she cannot do anything with herself. Her father is much more interested in art than in people. Others believe the world will end soon, and still others are already in despair if they don't know what to wear.
Mifti messes with any adult who tries to dictate to her and so she decides to grow up on her own and go her own way. So far, however, she has only taken responsibility for her pet, an axolotl - an amphibian who cannot grow up - and paid little attention to other people and the school, which she should have done.
But one day Mifti develops an obsession with Alice, a woman who is much older than she is. After an affair with the photographer who has already committed a number of offenses and a very enigmatic person, Mifti drifts ever further into the world of the Berlin techno clubs and eventually reaches even to heroin .
production
Literary template and staff
It is in Axolotl overkill for the feature film directorial debut of Helene Hegemann who also wrote the screenplay for the film. For this purpose, Hegemann adapted her book Axolotl Roadkill from 2010. Only three weeks after its publication, the debut novel of the seventeen year olds had achieved cult status and was sixth among the best-selling books in Germany. It was already known in 2011 that Hegemann wanted to film her best-selling novel. The eponymous axolotl is a tailed amphibian actually native to Mexico, which reaches sexual maturity without changing its external larval shape, i.e. does not grow up, so to speak.
occupation
In the film, Jasna Fritzi Bauer can be seen in the lead role of 16-year-old Mifti. Laura Tonke and Julius Feldmeier play their half-siblings Annika and Edmond. The role of the femme fatale Alice was cast with the Spanish actress Arly Jover , and Hans Löw plays her ex-husband. The actress Mavie Hörbiger took on the role of Ophelia. Nikolai Kinski and Sabine Vitua took on other roles .
Filming and funding
The shooting took place in August and September 2015. The film was shot in the Berlin techno club Tresor .
The film received funding from the German Film Fund , from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and from the Film Funding Agency , which funded the film with 200,000 euros. The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg contributed a total of 350,000 euros for the production and project development .

The 2017 Sydney Film Festival included the film in its Festival Award Winners series . In June 2017 the film was presented in the official competition at the Tel Aviv LGBT Film Festival. The film was released in German cinemas on June 29, 2017. From June 30, 2017 it was shown at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival .
reception
Age rating
In Germany, the film is FSK 12. The reason for the release states: “The story offers few points of contact for a young audience due to the protagonist who tends to keep a distance and the artificial setting. There is no danger that the depicted drug consumption and the conspicuous behavior of the main character encourage imitation. Individual scenes, the sometimes rude language and the atmosphere of the film can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12, but even 12-year-olds are able to distance themselves sufficiently. "
Reviews
So far, the film has won over 64 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .
Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter says Hegemann is following in the footsteps of Larry Clark and Gus Van Sant with her film . Mintzer thinks that even if Hegemanns told Roman Axolotl Roadkill through the eyes of a teenager, it managed to reach a large audience, this boldness would be lost in a film that appears exaggerated in many places.
Jessica Kiang from Variety speaks of a formally impressive, but thematically slippery directorial debut in which the parallels between Mifti and the Axolotl become clear, and the question arises to what extent the two futureless and absolutely self-centered individuals should be envied. Kiang recognizes a German surrealism in the film, which recently also characterized films like Toni Erdmann and, to a lesser extent, The Flowers of Yesterday .
Jens Balzer from Zeit Online explains that at no point in the film does Mifti really manage to let go and merge with a raving crowd, a euphoric situation. She always sticks to what she has brought from the world into the party rooms, be it companions or the general burden of her existence.
From the German Film and Media Review was Axolotl overkill with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “Mifti's search, her despair and anger are almost physically noticeable in the film, and her defective perception in the madness of the party nights is transmitted directly to the viewer through a partly non-linear narrative style. All cinematic means, like the outstanding montage here and throughout the film, concentrate on expressing Mifti's state of mind. It is certainly thanks to this formal consistency that at no point in the film is there a question of whether or not anyone is allowed to take drugs, whether Mifti is seduced or not, whether she is crazy or not - none of these ambivalences need any didactically motivated Clarification, but rather condense into an enormously complex and therefore wonderfully successful portrait.
