Böhlplatten has been a district of Bad Blankenburg in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia since 1992 . The place is home to around 80 residents.

Geography and geology

The place is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains at an altitude of 475  m above sea level. NN on the left edge of the Schwarza valley , about three kilometers as the crow flies west-southwest of the core town of Bad Blankenburg. The city of Rudolstadt , the capital and administrative center of the region, is located 8 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of Böhlplatten.

The operating facilities of the Böhlscheibe slate quarries were in operation until the 1970s. The “phycodic slate” that was present here was removed and deposited in heaps in order to reach the layers of roofing slate underneath. The quality of the Böhlplatten roof slate was not coveted by the craftsmen because of quartzite deposits and poor cleavage properties, the Lehesten roof slate was preferred. The material was still used in the manufacture of roofing felt, as an aggregate in the chemical industry and for the manufacture of Gesarol, a pesticide, industrial use.

The location is directly connected to Bad Blankenburg via the "Böhlplattener Weg", an approximately 4 kilometer long local road. There is an alternative from the junction of the federal road 88 in Quittelsdorf via the district road K 128 with the stage locations Fröbitz and Cordobang .

history

The hamlet of Böhlplatten was first mentioned in 1361 in the spelling "Belzibe", and it was also mentioned as "Belschiben" in 1411. Until 1866 the place belonged to the Blankenburg office, then to the Rudolstadt district office . In 1811 a large fire destroyed the entire village, only the church, a building from the 17th century, was spared. For the residents, mining was the livelihood, copper ore, cobalt and iron ore were mined in the area. Slate extraction was also important for the place. Until 1918 the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

Attractions

  • The church of Böhlplatten, which corresponds to the size of the place, marks the center of the place. The church was built in the 17th century. The nave is 7.6 m long and 5.5 m wide. The attached choir is 4.3 m long and 2.7 m wide. The church was restored in 1859, the roof was covered with slate, which is typical for the region. Inside there are two gallery floors. The barrel-shaped wooden ceiling was decorated in the flatter middle part with subtle stucco elements.
  • An old well with a stone trough and pole can be seen in the historical location.
  • The place belongs to the touristically developed Schwarzatal and has retained an agricultural character. There is an agricultural business on the northern outskirts; Grassland areas for keeping cattle and afforested trees line the edge of the valley and the location.
  • From the vantage point, you have a panoramic view of Greifenstein Castle on the opposite side of the valley .
  • The environmental information and nature conservation station “Dr. Helmut Steuer ”is an environmental education center and is entrusted with nature conservation projects in the district. The nature conservation station sees itself as a school in the countryside. It is named after the entomologist Dr. Helmut Steuer, who caught and researched rare butterfly species in the mining landscape around Bad Blankenburg and in the Schwarzatal.
  • The "Teufelstreppe" is a bizarre slate rock in the hallway. A legend tells of a fisher girl who once fled from a stranger (the devil) and hurried up the steep mountain slope. The intrusive pursuer tore stones from the rock and built a staircase with them to follow the girl. At the seventh step, only a few steps away from the girl, lightning struck him and hurled the pursuer into the depths.
