Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is a folk song written by Anne Bredon (later known as Anne Johannsen) in the late 1950s . It was recorded by Joan Baez (dubbed " Traditional " and so popular) and released in 1962 on her album Joan Baez in Concert, Part 1 . The song was later covered by the British rock band Led Zeppelin , who recorded it for their debut album Led Zeppelin, released in 1969 . Other interpretations of the song by Bredon include versions of The Plebs (1964), The Association in 1965 (which also recorded a live version in 1970), British pop singer Mark Wynter in 1965, and Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1967. These Version was in turn covered by the Welsh band Man together with John Cipollina in 1975 on their album Maximum Darkness (recorded live at Roundhouse, Chalk Farm on May 26, 1975).

Version by Joan Baez

While she was a student at UC-Berkeley around 1960 , Anne Bredon took part in the live folk radio show The Midnight Special on radio station KPFA and also sang Babe I'm Gonna Leave You . Another folk singer named Janet Smith was a guest on The Midnight Special , picked up the song and developed it further. She played it at a folk concert at Oberlin College . A performance attended by Joan Baez. Baez asked Smith to send her recordings of her song, including Babe I'm Gonna Leave You , and then began performing the song himself. It became the opening track on the album Joan Baez in Concert, Part 1 . Initially the song had no reference to the author, but after Smith contacted Bredon, who assured her authorship, later pressings of ... In Concert awarded the authorship to Bredon.

Version of Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin covered Baez's version as guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant were both Baez fans. Because no reference to the author was originally given on Baez ' album, Led Zeppelin listed the song under “Trad. arr. Page ”(Traditional, arranged by Page). In the 80s Bredon became aware of the version of Led Zeppelin and since 1990 "Anne Bredon / Jimmy Page & Robert Plant" are given as authors of the play. Bredon received a sizable royalty return. The version by Led Zeppelin is in A minor .

Page played Plant the song when they first met at Page's house in Pangbourne in late July 1968. Contrary to the occasional rumor that the arrangement and guitar were from Plant, Page told Guitar World :

“First of all, I had worked out the arrangement long before Robert came to my house and secondly, Robert didn't even play the flippin 'guitar in those days !! Thirdly, I didn't ask him if he could imagine playing that song, I TOLD him that I wanted to do it. "

- Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page may have recorded another version of the song with Steve Winwood in 1968 that was never released. The band only played the song at the Led Zeppelin concerts on their 1969 tour. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant later brought it back in a nine-minute version for the 1998 band reunion. There is also a live filmed performance of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You from the Led Zeppelin performance on Danmarks Radio in Gladsaxe ( Denmark ) on March 17, 1969. This performance is part of the Led Zeppelin DVD (2003).

As a result of touring the USA and visiting various Led Zeppelin cover bands and other musicians who played the song, Plant also performed the piece with his band Strange Sensations and as a solo artist. He also covered the song on his tour with The Sensational Spaceshifters.
