Babice ( German Babitz ) is a village with a Schulzenamt of the rural community Oświęcim in the powiat Oświęcimski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .

geography

Babice is located in the Auschwitz Basin ( Kotlina Oświęcimska ), between the Vistula and the Soła . The state road DK 44 runs through Babice and connects Gliwice with Kraków via Oświęcim .

Neighboring towns are the city of Bieruń in the north, Broszkowice in the northeast, the city of Oświęcim in the southeast, Brzezinka in the southwest.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1314 as Babice . Since 1315 it belonged to the Duchy of Auschwitz , this existed in the time of Polish particularism . Since 1327 consisted suzerainty of the Kingdom of Bohemia . In 1457 the duchy with the village of Babicze was bought by the Polish king.

In 1564 Babice was completely incorporated as part of the new Silesia District of the Krakow Voivodeship to the Kingdom of Poland , from 1569 the Polish-Lithuanian aristocratic republic .

During the first partition of Poland , Babice became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804). From 1782 the village belonged to the Myslenice district (1819 with the seat in Wadowice ). After the abolition of patrimonial it formed a parish in the Biała District , later in the Oświęcim District .

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Babice came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . The Babitz subcamp existed there from March 1, 1943 to January 18, 1945.

From 1975 to 1998 Babice was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
