Bachem is a district and district of the city of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The historic wine village lies between Ahrweiler and Bad Neuenahr on the right bank of the Ahr . The place is particularly known for the cultivation of Frühburgunder . Bachem has always belonged to the city of Ahrweiler, which has formed the city of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler since 1969 with neighboring Neuenahr.

history

Finds from the Stone Age to the Roman Age attest to the millennia-old tradition of this residential area . It was first mentioned in a document in 798. Around 1170 Gottfried founded the family of the Knights of Bachem. Viticulture has been documented around Bachem since the 12th century . A bridge to the village of Hemmessen on the other side of the Ahr is mentioned in a document for 1353 .

Since the 15th century, Bachem has been the subject of a dispute between the city of Ahrweiler and Wadenheim , one of the three villages that later became Bad Neuenahr, for almost 400 years . In 1667 the plague raged in Bachem. In Bachem there were two castles that were built by local knight families, the Ahrburg and the Himmelsburg. Both castles were destroyed at the end of the Thirty Years War .

Bachem is known as a wine town. Early Burgundy is grown on 6 hectares , which corresponds to 23% of the Frühburgunder planted on the Ahr. The Bachem winegrowers' association was founded in 1878 and merged with today's Dagernova Weinmanufaktur in 1971.

Attractions

The period of construction of the St. Leonard Chapel - an unplastered romanized quarry stone building - is not exactly known. The city archive contains invoices from 1585 to 1678 for urgent repairs. The chapel was rededicated on February 27, 1716 . The altar from 1716 is well worth seeing. From 1924 to 1927 the building was restored again. The collapsed ceiling was replaced by a barrel vault . The St. Anna Chapel, which was first mentioned in 1285 as the Marienkapelle, probably dates from 1220. A third chapel high up in the Bachemer Valley is called the Lourdes Chapel and traces its origin back to the promise of a happy homecoming of a Bachemer from the Second World War .

The Bachemer bakery dates back to 1650. On the ground floor, used as a community bakery , it has a party room on the upper floor, which served as a village school from 1828 to 1848, later as a youth center and since 1978 has housed a wine museum that is well worth seeing .
