geography

The 173.3  m high Benther Berg in the Calenberger Land towers over the city center of Hanover, a few kilometers away, by around 120 m. Rainwater that hits it seeps away and sometimes appears in some springs at the foot of the mountain. The Badeborn pond is located at about 67.5  m on the edge of the forest of Benther Berg. The area in Badenstedt since 1920 by incorporation of the city of Hanover. The adjacent plain slopes gently to the Leine towards the northeast .

Historical

The Great Garden (copper engraving, around 1708)

In order to be able to operate the water features in the Great Garden in Herrenhausen, which were considered appropriate in the Baroque period when the electoral dignity was sought , the water from the Dieckborn , which had been brought in from the kitchen garden through pipes since 1676, was not enough. Therefore, in 1686, a commission from Duke Ernst August suggested that the water from the bathing spring, located relatively high on the Benther Berg, be conveyed to Herrenhausen. From four ponds, which were later dammed up and in which the water was collected, it flowed through two wooden pipes about four kilometers long to the Leine near Limmer . The river was crossed under the Limmer Bridge by means of lead pipes and the water flowed on to two elevated tanks with a total of 24,000 m³ on a sand hill on today's Berggartenstrasse. From there the fountains in the Great Garden were fed. In spite of several improvements, since 1689 the pipeline was led on a bridge over the Leine, there were further problems, such as leaky pipe connections, and the amount of water available and the water pressure did not meet the requirements. In 1697, the construction of the Ernst August Canal , the use of a water wheel and later pumps was started to supply Herrenhausen Castle .

The area with the ponds was later leased , fenced in and converted into an approximately 0.3 hectare fish pond .

Todays use

Today the pond consists of connected sub-basins

The Badebornteich has been leased to the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) since 2004 , which previously worked on a voluntary basis for decades , partly with the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), on Lenther Chaussee further north , in particular to protect the common toad from road traffic , committed.

In order to protect the area with its amphibians such as toads , tree frogs and mountain newts , mammals such as dwarf , water and broad-winged bats as well as birds such as the little grebes , kingfishers and in the vicinity also tree sparrows from disturbances, the difficult to see biotope was initially fenced off. In order to give interested visitors an insight into the near-natural still water and its surroundings, two viewing windows were incorporated into the existing fence in 2007. In the same year, the district council of the district of Ahlem-Badenstedt-Davenstedt unanimously decided, among other things,

" [...] to inform the walkers / residents by setting up two information boards in suitable places (with a view of the ponds) about the unique amphibian population in the region (species, hiking trails, etc.) and thus to understand the special protection of these Area to contribute. Furthermore, the information boards should include a reference to the possibility of guided tours for school classes and daycare centers , stating the telephone number of the relevant contact person at BUND .
To offer natural history public tours for residents 1-2 times a year. "

The Badebornteich is located on a hiking and cycling path from Badenstedt to Benther Berg near the Badenstedt riding and vaulting club below the forest edge path, which marks the city limits of Hanover as part of the Grüner Ring cycle path in the direction of the Jägerheim . Entering the fenced pond area is prohibited.
