The 2016/2017 Badminton Bundesliga season was the 46th season of the Badminton Bundesliga . Ten teams were at the start. New this season was that the first two teams in the league qualify directly for the newly introduced Final Four. Places 3 to 6 play off the two remaining places to the Final Four in a play-off. The bottom of the table is relegated directly to the 2nd Bundesliga. The table ninth plays together with the two promoted players from the 2nd Bundesliga North and South for the remaining in the 1st Bundesliga.
TSV 1906 Freystadt is new with the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga South . The promoted from the 2nd Bundesliga North FC Langenfeld announced his immediate withdrawal after the 13th matchday.
The complete rating system is also new. From this season onwards, 7 games will be played (two men doubles, one women doubles, two men singles, one women singles and one mixed). There is therefore no tie. For a 7-0 or 6-1 win there are now 3 points in the table. A 5: 2 or 4: 3 win gives you 2 points and even a 3: 4 defeat gives you at least one point. In addition, three sets of wins up to 11 points are now played (maximum 15 points). This should bring more tension back into the league.
