In the main round, which is divided into a round trip, all teams met twice on the basis of a game plan set before the season; once on their own seat and once on that of the opponent. The winner of each game received two points; in the event of a tie, both teams received one point each. The games played by Fortuna Regensburg were not counted.

Following the main round, the German champions were determined in a playoff round, where the first of the main round met fourth and the second met third in the semifinals. The two winners of the semifinals contested the playoff final.

In the 2008/09 season there was no further relegated due to the withdrawal of Fortuna Regensburg.
