The Gronau (Westf) train station is a train station in the Münsterland city of Gronau .

It is located on the two railway lines Münster – Enschede and Dortmund – Enschede . In addition to this station, there were a total of six other stations in the area of today's city of Gronau, of which the one in the Epe district is still operated today.

history

The former station was opened in September 1875 as a joint station of the Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Railway Company and the Münster-Enscheder Railway Company . The latter, however, took over financially with the railway construction project, which was then continued by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company . The two routes coming from Münster and Dortmund come together here for a joint continuation to Enschede in the Netherlands .

On July 18, 1903, the Nederlandsch-Westfaalsche Stoomtrein-Maatschappij opened a steam tram route from Oldenzaal via Losser to Gronau. This railway received a station in Glane on the Dutch side of the border for customs clearance and its own station "Gronau Holländische Bahn" shortly before the actual Gronau station.

Almost five years later, Gronau also received a railway connection to Bad Bentheim through the Bentheim Railway . Their route ran from the Gronau train station near the German-Dutch border to the north. With the opening of this route, two more stations followed in today's Gronau urban area, the Bauverein station in the city itself and the Driland station at the "Dreiländereck" Westphalia / Lower Saxony / Netherlands.

The opening of the Ochtrup – Rheine railway in 1905 also increased the volume of traffic in Gronau station, as the trains from Ochtrup to Gronau were tied through. In 1914/1915, the station was completely rebuilt and received new signal box technology and a new reception building that is still there today.

In the period before the Second World War, operations on many Dutch interurban trams were greatly reduced or stopped, including the route between Oldenzaal and Gronau in 1936, which was canceled two years later from Losser to the German border. The rest of the line was shut down and dismantled during World War II. The line to Bad Bentheim suffered a similar experience a few years later: passenger traffic between Gildehaus and Gronau was discontinued at the end of May 1965 (the remaining section nine years later), the line finally closed in 1981 and dismantled between Gronau and Achterberg .

Also in 1981, passenger traffic on the Gronau – Enschede line, which is now part of the German Federal Railroad , was discontinued. The line was then closed on June 15, 1985. It was not until 2001 that cross-border passenger traffic was resumed.

Since 2008, signals and points in the train station have been remotely controlled by the electronic interlocking (ESTW) in Coesfeld , previously there were three (from 1953 still one) mechanical interlockings . The connection to the ESTW was accompanied by a further simplification of the track system, after some tracks had been shut down in the 1980s.

Current condition

Today there are still three platform tracks and three sidings on the Enschede side.

The station is served alternately by the RB 51 (Dortmund – Enschede) and the RB 64 (Münster – Enschede) line, which run every hour and complement each other on the route to Enschede every half hour during the day. The reception building now houses a customer center / railway agency of a private travel agency, after the Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH , which previously operated there, relinquished operations to the DB in 2011, a bike station with a kiosk and tourist office as well as offices of the DB Regio NRW , the Federal Police and Westfalenbus .

The level crossing on Bahnhofstrasse directly to the east of the station was closed in 2009 and replaced by an underpass on Zollstrasse west of the station. A new underpass for pedestrians and cyclists was also built in 2009 east of the platforms, with the island platform with tracks 1 and 2 now also accessible via an elevator. The outer platform with platform 3 can also be reached barrier-free via Steinstraße.
