The Lette (Kr Coesfeld) Bahnhof is a breakpoint of the Dortmund-Enschede railway . In 1990 the station building was converted into a voluntary museum.

history

The citizens of Lette once campaigned for a train station in their place. The Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Railway Company began in 1874 after lengthy project planning with the construction of a railway line from Dortmund via Gronau to Enschede . The route should end up costing around 7 million thalers. The section Dülmen -Ost via Lette to Coesfeld was completed on August 1, 1875. The 95.68 km long route was then passable from September 30, 1875. The remains of an old castle in Lette had to give way for the railway construction . Initially, only a station keeper's house was planned in Lette. Then the trains would have passed Lette. The municipality of Lette paid 1,000 Taler for the construction of a stop and also made land available for the train station and the tracks free of charge.

The reception building

The reception building of Latvian was in the last quarter of the 19th century brick building in Rundbogenstil as biaxial, gable permanent building with flat sloping gable roof built. The signal box and goods handling area were added after the turn of the century. Initially, Lette was only a small bus stop in rural Westmünsterland , but it already had its own train station restaurant . However, this was closed again when the Prussian State Railroad took over.

The station facilities

The Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Railway Company became the property of the Prussian State Railway on January 1, 1903 . Around 1907 the stop was upgraded to a station and got a second track for train crossings , extended signal systems and a loading track. At that time a separate crew was stationed in Lette to maintain the railway systems. The railway had become an essential social and economic factor of the small town not only as a transport company, but also as a service company. The Lette station was an independent station with its own master from 1908 to 1959, then it was subordinated to the Coesfeld station. The last staff was withdrawn on October 23, 1990, and since then Lette has only been an unoccupied stop.

Operation at the station in the past and present

The first timetable from August 1, 1875 showed three pairs of trains a day . The railway line was initially used for passenger traffic, for the rapid transport of workers to the Ruhr area , especially to Dortmund, then also for slower freight traffic .

During the First World War , the station was a transit station for troops from the front and supplies of the imperial army, then the target of returning wounded and discharged soldiers . In the period of peace until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the Reich Railway Directorate in Münster offered eight pairs of trains in 2nd and 3rd class passenger services .

The Second World War also claimed its victims in Lette through air raids. After the war damage had been repaired (the train station still shows clear signs of fire today) and the line was interrupted, operations were resumed in the spring of 1945. Around the time the Reichsbahn was replaced by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1949, 15 passenger trains ran in both directions.

The closure of this route has been averted to this day. In the mid-1950s, the railway still carried the majority of the goods. She made an important contribution to life in the country. Since June 1993 no goods have been transported to Lette by rail as wagonloads. Under the direction of DB, 16 pairs of trains ran hourly until December 11, 2004 in local passenger traffic on the Dortmund – Enschede railway line . With the timetable unchanged, the trips from December 2004 to December 2011 were carried out by Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH . Since December 2011, operations management with Talent railcars has been in the hands of DB Regio AG, Region NRW . After the dissolution of the Münster Federal Railway Directorate on December 31, 1974, Lette station belongs to the BD Essen.

The locomotives and security measures

The barrier post 43 near the train station

During the early sixties nor the steam series 24 , 38.10 (Prussian P 8), 50 and 78 (Prussian T 18) dominated in the passenger and goods transport, the route Dortmund was Coesfeld mid-1960s all of the diesel engines and diesel railcars and took over the accumulator railcar. The DB set last only the older diesel railcars of series 624 /924 and the more modern, but less space offered 628 series / 928 and Talent railcar one. The latter were only used by Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH . DB Regio AG, Region NRW, is currently also using Talent railcars.

The railroad brought not only progress, but also the risk of accidents . In order to avoid collisions with the growing traffic on rail-level crossings, barriers and guard houses had to be set up.

The railway museum

The DB had already approved the demolition of the station building. This would have irretrievably lost one of the last remaining historical buildings in the village and a prime example of Westphalian railway architecture. However, an association of railway enthusiasts founded on May 22, 1990 took on the facilities of the Lette station. Thanks to great effort, the station, including the technical indoor and outdoor facilities and the half-timbered barrier post 43, which is unique in its construction , was given monument status on January 28, 1991 . This did not prevent Deutsche Bahn from removing part of the track system in November 2000.

Changing exhibitions take place in the rooms of the museum, which illuminate new and old aspects of railway history as well as current transport issues. Another focus is the life of the railway workers on a small train station like in Lette.

Museum premises

In the former station building of the train station, the original furnishings are shown in a permanent exhibition. A special feature is the completely preserved lever bank of the signal box with block box . It is still fully functional, so that a prototypical operating sequence can be demonstrated in the signal box. The premises are equipped with many work utensils for the daily needs of the railway workers. Today, tickets for the museum are sold from the original ticket cabinet . In the middle of the service room, partitions for the presentation of posters , photos and the like can be erected to complement the exhibitions in the former waiting room.

The growing collection of the museum includes models , railway signs , photos , original files and plans of the Lette train station, signal lanterns , conductor tongs , uniforms , service caps , historical posters , locomotive parts, tools and much more.

Outside area and the museum garden

The excavated wheel of a steam locomotive

One of the special features is a rare find : during sewer work in the Coesfeld industrial park, a relic from the Second World War unexpectedly came to light on January 7, 1992, a steam locomotive coupling wheel. The 14 spokes and the diameter of 1.40 meters suggest that it was blown off by a Prussian G 10 (DR / DB class 57.10-40), a five-axle two-cylinder freight locomotive. It was set up in the museum garden together with wheel sets recovered from bomb craters in the Coesfeld marshalling yard and the remains of a Russian freight wagon as spoiled war booty, as well as a French spoke wheel set from the Chemin de Fer de l'Est . Then there are the chimneys of the steam locomotives P 8 (38 3553) and G 8 (55 4647) donated to the association.

Coesfeld railway retirees rebuilt the memorial for the victims of both world wars. On May 21, 2000, the certificate of honor with the names and dates of 122 fallen railroad workers was walled in.

The large main and distant signals that have been preserved were set up in the museum garden, which visitors can operate from the signal box. In the station basement is a large Marklin - model railway in H0 scale demonstrated. It shows a branch station on a double-track line with Bw in a foothills landscape. A narrow-gauge railway leads from the train station to a higher quarry. The shadow station under the main slab is reached via a spiral rail .

Only one of the four Letteraner barrier posts was spared the demolition as post 43 and serves as an example of the installation of a formerly typical mechanical barrier system with an external crankcase. The half-timbered building in the museum garden, true to the original, bears witness to the development of the railway safety systems in terms of traffic history and to the working conditions of railway workers from different eras. There are also some masts for telegraph lines and a small telephone booth .

The large club archive is being built in further basement rooms with original documents, service regulations, plans, etc. In addition to the rail bus trailer VB 142 526 (995 526-1, built 1955, acquired by Almetal-Bahn and transported to Lette on October 25, 1993), a historical G10 is used as a workshop wagon (converted as a construction train wagon for the former Krefeld catenary maintenance company , transported from Bocholt to Lette on November 20, 1998 ) and another freight wagon for storing items from the collection, a Gms freight wagon is available for the Lette home association's bike rental. A small locomotive shed in front of the station offers protection for the original rail bike. Thanks to a sponsor, the goods handling facility was completely restored in 2004, equipped with a kitchen and sanitary facilities and converted into a meeting and exhibition room. The station forecourt was repaved in August – September 1998; a Coesfeld council member donated a silver linden tree for its center. In the course of the paving work, the museum garden was laid out and planted.
