Greifenberger Kleinbahn ( Polish : Gryficka Kolej Wąskotorowa , today officially Nadmorska Kolej Wąskotorowa ) is a small railway system in Pomerania .

The Greifenberger Kleinbahnen AG was considered the largest Pomeranian small railway company. At its best, its network in western Pomerania comprised 168.5 kilometers of routes, which were planned and built by the Berlin company Lenz & Co GmbH . The first two lines were given tracks with a gauge of 750 mm, which were converted to meter gauge by 1905; the routes built after 1900 were meter gauge from the start.

The small train is still operated in Poland - with severe restrictions - by Gmina Rewal .

history

1896 to 1945

The company's share capital was divided between the province of Pomerania, the Prussian state, the districts of Greifenberg and Cammin and the cities of Greifenberg and Treptow. On July 1, 1896, the first line was opened between Greifenberg and Seebad Horst . In the years up to 1903, the line via Gülzow and Kantreck (where you can change to the standard-gauge state railway in the direction of Stettin - Cammin / Wollin ) to Stepenitz , where there was a connection to sea traffic in the port.

In addition to passenger traffic, the railway transported lime from the Zarnglaff stone works as well as bricks, grain, wood, cement, raw sugar, fruit and vegetables to the ship in Stettin . In 1940, 18 steam locomotives and one railcar were available for this purpose.

In addition, the Kleinbahn temporarily operated the 16 km long Dummadel - Mühlenbruch line , which belonged to the Kolberger Kleinbahn AG and had provided the connection to it since 1899. A four-kilometer-long line from Zarnglaff to Rackitt was opened as a private connecting line in standard and meter gauge on September 6, 1911 to transport lime. Later it was used for public goods transport.

In 1910, the management of Lenz & Co was transferred to the small railroad department of the Pomeranian Provincial Association in Stettin, and in 1920, after its dissolution, to the Association of Smaller Railways in Lower Pomerania. After a severe economic crisis, the routes were assigned to the Pomeranian regional railway directorate in 1937/1938 . When the Pomeranian State Railways were founded as a corporation under public law, they took over the railway with effect from January 1, 1940 under the name "Greifenberger Bahnen" .

The handover to the Reichsbahn was in Treptow ( Rollbockgrube ), Greifenberg, Gülzow and Kantreck.

At the end of the war, the Greifenberg – Stepenitz railway served as an essential escape route to the west.

After 1945

After 1945 all railways were subordinated to the Polish State Railways PKP . On the branch lines Golczewo (Gülzow) –Śniatowo (Schnatow), Trzebiatów (Treptow (Rega)) - Mrzeżyno (Deep) and Kołomąć (Koldemanz) - Trzygłów (Trieglaff) the traffic was stopped. On the route Łoźnica (Kantreck) - Stepnica (Stepenitz), with the increasing degree of motorization of the population, passenger traffic was only maintained until 1978, after which freight traffic was still sporadic.

In 1998, the intersection with trunk road 3 Stettin – Baltic Sea coast at the Babigoszcz (Hammer) stop was paved, so that it was no longer possible to drive on the route between Łoźnica and Stepnica.

In 2006, the rail network between Stepnica and Łoźnica was partially dismantled and converted into a cycle path.

Today, the Nadmorska Kolej Wąskotorówka museum train from Gryfice to Pogorzelica (Fischerkaten) is only in operation for a few months of the year - occasionally under steam , and the bridge to Trzebiatów has been closed since 2000.

Since 2011, the coastal section between the stations Niechorze (Horst Seebad) and Pogorzelica has been repaired for 40 million złoty by the contracted company consortium under HUSAR Budownictwo Inżynieryjne Sp. Z oo, and the station buildings there have also been completely renovated. The co-financing came from the EU regional fund ERDF .

As a result, there has been no operation since late summer 2011. Structural delays (there was a complete loss of a station building due to previously undetectable structural damage) prevented the planned resumption of operations for 2012. In September 2013, the brief resumption began before the end of the season with a diesel-powered locomotive.

Current

According to the 2016 summer timetable, four pairs of trains ran from May 30 to September 30 on the section between Trzęsacz (Hoff) and Pogorzelica (Fischerkaten). The entire route, from / to Gryfice, only served one; the first train to Pogorzelica came from Gryfice and the last in the opposite direction went to Gryfice. The newly renovated depot is located there.

A museum about the history of the Pomeranian narrow-gauge railways up to 1945 and afterwards has been located in Gryfice since 1978.
