The Landshut – Plattling line is a single-track, electrified main line in Lower Bavaria that runs along the Isar and then connects Munich with Passau.

history

The line was completed on October 15, 1875 between Plattling and Pilsting and on May 15, 1880 between Landshut and Pilsting and was supposed to connect Munich with Prague as the southern part of the Bavarian Forest Railway . Due to the unfavorable route through the mountains of the Bohemian Forest , however, there was never any major cross-border traffic on this line. This was and is to this day via Regensburg and the Schwandorf – Furth railway line in the forest .

With the construction of the line from Landshut to Pilsting, the Pilsting – Landau (Isar) section was expanded to two tracks. However, this second track was dismantled in 1942 due to the war and transferred to the occupied territories.

Electrical operation began on May 25, 1976 in order to avoid the time-consuming and costly locomotive changes for the through trains Munich – Landshut – Plattling – Passau in Landshut and Plattling. For this purpose, 83 km of the line were equipped with overhead lines for 13 million Deutschmarks (6.6 million euros) , three new bridges were built, one was demolished and 1,035 catenary masts were erected.

business

There are 35 level crossings on the route in the Landshut – Landau (Isar) section.

Traffic volume

On this route, only the Danube-Isar-Express , a regional express line, which connects Munich with Landshut, Plattling and Passau predominantly every hour, is currently operating exclusively . This was awarded to DB Regio in the tendering process . Class 440 multiple units and double-deck push-pull trains are used as vehicles. The Otzing stop was closed when the Danube-Isar-Express went into operation at the end of 2009.
In addition, freight trains run to various connections on this route. The largest of these is the BMW Dingolfing plant . Another important connection, the BMW spare parts logistics center in Wallersdorf, has been connected to the railways since autumn 2017 .

Future of passenger transport

After the Wörth (Isar) station was made barrier-free in 2016, all stops between Landshut and Plattling are to be served by all trains from the 2018 timetable. A system crossing in Wörth (Isar) is necessary for this. So far, these crossings have usually taken place in the Loiching depot between Wörth (Isar) and Dingolfing.

Expansion measures

A double-track expansion is required for the entire route. With this measure, stops caused by train crossings and the resulting delays are to be eliminated. The Landshut – Dingolfing section in particular is heavily used by goods traffic to and from the BMW plant.

The expansion was initially included as a potential requirement in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . In September 2018, the expansion was upgraded to an urgent requirement. The project includes a 12 km long double-track section between Wörth (Isar) and Dingolfing, in which the passenger trains cross, an expansion of the Schwaigen station, a reconstruction of the Otzing station, a passing track in the area of the BMW distribution center and a connecting curve near Plattling for the Dingolfing - Regensburg route. The investment is expected to be 66 million euros. In the project description of the BVWP 2030, however, the 12 kilometer long double-track section between Wörth (Isar) and Dingolfing is not mentioned.

As part of the BEG's “Stationsoffensive Bayern”, a stop in the center of the Ergolding market was decided in 2015. This was originally supposed to be operational by December 2019; the construction was postponed indefinitely. Ergolding used to have a stop on the outskirts of the Munich – Regensburg railway line.
