The Quéroy-Pranzac-Thiviers railway was a 62.7 kilometer long railway line that connected the Angoulême metropolitan area in the Charente department with Thiviers in the Dordogne department . Passenger traffic was maintained on it between 1892 and 1940. It has been shut down since 1985.

description

Nontron train station

The Angoulême-Nontron-Thiviers ( French Ligne du Quéroy-Pranzac à Thiviers ) railway line was single-track and not electrified. Their track width was 1435 millimeters, their maximum inclination 16 ‰. It connected the station of Quéyroi-Pranzac in the east of Angoulêmes with the station of Thiviers. Quéroy-Pranzac station is on the Limoges-Bénédictins-Angoulême line , while Thiviers is on the Limoges-Bénédictins-Périgueux line . An important stopover was Nontron in the Périgord vert , sub-prefectural town of the Dordogne department. The railway line formed the western section of the connection between Angoulême and Brive-la-Gaillarde in the Corrèze department .

The line is still listed under the number 617 000 in the French national railway register. Only 2.7 kilometers of the former route are still in use today near Thiviers (access to the Planeaulx quarry ).

During the construction of the railway line, numerous road and path underpasses as well as overpasses were incurred, several bridges over the Bandiat (such as the 131-meter-long Viaduc du Refuge from Saint-Martial-de-Valette and the 168-meter-long Viaduc sur le Bandiat from Nontron ), the 108 meter long Viaduc de la Dronne over the Dronne in Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière and the bridge over the Côle in Saint-Jean-de-Côle. A 444 meter long tunnel ( Tunnel de Nontron ) was also necessary, which ran through a ridge southeast of Nontron.

The journey time of the almost 40 kilometers between Quéroy-Pranzac and Nontron was between 60 and 70 minutes in 1888. Angoulême could be reached in just under 30 minutes via Magnac-Touvre and Ruelle . There were three classes of people.

history

Railway bridge over the Bandiattal in Nontron

The beginnings of the Angoulême-Nontron-Thiviers railway go back to 1868, when, on July 18, a usage agreement was signed between the then Minister of Agriculture, Trade and Public Works and the Compagnie des chemins de fer des Charentes , which was the same on the same date Day was confirmed by imperial decree (N ° 16273). A new decree of April 6, 1870 (N ° 17665) recorded the public use of the route and legalized the concession.

Originally, however, a project drawn up by Louis Latrade in 1870 envisaged connecting Montauban with Angoulème via Cahors and Sarlat . The decision then fell on Brive, which could be reached in two sections from Angoulème - Quéroy-Pranzac-Thiviers and Thiviers-Brive-la-Gaillarde .

In 1878, the French state took over the Compagnie des chemins de fer des Charentes and then transferred the concession to the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO) on June 28, 1883 - which was legally enacted on November 20 of the same year (N ° 14217) was anchored.

The first section of the railway line went into operation in 1881. The train station in Nontron opened in August 1883. The last section from Nontron to Thiviers was not navigated until May 30, 1892 (the large viaduct over the Bandiattal in Nontron was completed in 1887). The second section Thiviers – Brive then followed in August 1897.

The PO held its concession until the end of 1937, but was then replaced in 1938 by the state-owned SNCF , which ended passenger traffic on June 27, 1940. Freight traffic was continued, but then gradually discontinued from 1965 onwards:

  • Section from Nontron to Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière (route kilometers PK 540,600 to PK 546,000) - shutdown on December 7th, 1965. Confirmed in a decree of December 7th, 1965.
  • Section from Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière to Thiviers (route kilometers PK 546,000 to PK 564,500) - closed on February 1, 1971. Confirmed in a decree of February 22, 1991.
  • Section from Marthon to Nontron (route kilometers PK 518,200 to PK 540,600) - shutdown in 1975. Confirmed in a decree of February 18, 1976.
  • Section from Quéroy-Pranzac to Marthon (route kilometers PK 501.234 to 518.200) - shutdown on November 1, 1985. Confirmed in a decree of December 9, 1992.

Secondary tracks

In Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière and Thiviers there was a connection to the network of secondary railways in meter gauge between 1890 and 1949 , which was operated by the Tramways de la Dordogne (TD) company. She was based in Périgueux and built routes in all directions. The 91 km long railway line went north to St. Mathieu , which had a connection to the Chemins de fer départementaux de la Haute-Vienne (CDHV) in the direction of Limoges . Another route of the company led east to Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche and from there southwest back to Thiviers.

While the two lines St.-Pardou-St.-Mathieu and St. Yrieix-Thiviers were only in operation between 1912 and 1934, trains ran on the Périgueux-St-Pardoux route via Brantôme until 1949.

Usage today

Tarred cycle path from Pranzac to Feuillade

The railway line on the Quéroy-Pranzac-Thiviers line was converted into bicycle or hiking trails after the track was removed. It is now used in the Charente department between Pranzac and Feuillade as a partially paved cycle path. An extension to Nontron is being considered. In the Dordogne department, between Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière and the Planeaulx quarries near Thiviers, it functions as a voie verte (green path), ie a hiking trail. Between Saint-Jean-de-Côle and Saint-Romain-et-Saint-Clément, a Sentier de la loco (Locomotive Path) educational trail was inaugurated in October 2016 .
