Baldwin is a city in Duval County in the US state of Florida with 1425 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Baldwin is completely enclosed by the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located in the west of Duval County, within the Westside .
history
The first settlement under the name Thigpen took place in 1846. The railway age in Thigpen began in 1858 with the construction of the Florida Railroad between Fernandina and Starke . The name Thigpen was changed to Baldwin in 1860 in honor of the President of the Florida, Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad , Abel Seymour Baldwin . This year a second railway line was built from Lake City via Baldwin to Jacksonville . Another railway line was built in 1899 by the Jacksonville and Southwestern Railway from Jacksonville via Baldwin to Newberry .
During the Civil War , the place was a supply point for the Confederates until it was completely burned down by Union troops on August 15, 1864 . The place was rebuilt by 1875 and all war damage was removed. In 1885 the place had 250 inhabitants. Baldwin was officially promoted to town on May 22, 1913 .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 1425 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 664 households. The population density was 259.1 inh / km². 73.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 21.9% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 0.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.5% to several ethnic groups. 2.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 33.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 28.9% of all households. 64.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.42 people and the average family size was 3.00 people.
26.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 45.2% of the population were male and 54.8% were female.
The median annual income was $ 28,958, with 28.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 98.38% of the population and 1.62% spoke Spanish .
