Barbara Kleiner

Barbara Kleiner (born February 17, 1952 in Linz , Austria ) is a literary translator .

life and work

Barbara Kleiner completed a study of comparative literature , Romance languages and German and was in 1979 with a thesis on Proust translations Walter Benjamin at the University of Innsbruck for Doctor of Philosophy PhD. She then taught German as a Foreign Language at the State University of Milan (1980–1988) and at the University of Oregon (1988–1989). 1990–1993 she was a research assistant at the Institute for Romance Studies at Saarland University. She has been living in Munich as a freelance translator since 1993 .

Barbara Kleiner translates literary texts from Italian (including by Primo Levi and Italo Svevo ), French and English into German . She is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ.

Honors

• In 2007 she received the translation award of the Kunststiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen for her translation of Ippolito Nievo's Confessions of an Italian
• In 2011 she received the German-Italian Translator Award for the translation of the novel An Angel of Goodness by the same author.
