German-Italian translator award
The German-Italian translator award ( Italian Premio Italo-Tedesco per la Traduzione ) is a literary award that has been awarded annually since 2008 .
The prize is awarded jointly by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media , the Foreign Office and the Italian Ministry of Culture , in cooperation with the Centro per il Libro e la Lettura (Cepell) and the Goethe Institute . Its aim is to continuously promote cultural exchange between the two countries and, in this context, to recognize the essential importance of literary translations.
The awards are given to translators from Germany or Italy every year, and the award ceremony alternates between Italy and Germany. The award winners are selected by independent jurors from both countries. The translations into Italian are evaluated by an Italian jury, those into German by German jurors, and both juries are completed by a representative from the other team.
The main prize goes to an outstanding translation of a literary work; the translation must have been published in the two years preceding the award ceremony or it must appear in the current year. The prize is currently (as of 2020) endowed with € 10,000. It is at the discretion of the jury to also award a prize for the life's work of a translator. In addition, a young talent award can be awarded that is linked to a residency grant.
