history

The history of the place is closely linked to that of Semifonte , a fortified city in the immediate vicinity of today's Barberino, whose castle was built in 1177 and destroyed by the Florentines in 1202. The place gained importance mainly due to its location on the Roman roads, the Via Regia Romana, the Via Francigena and the Via Chiantigiana, which connect Siena with Florence. Two city gates are still preserved today; the Porta Romana (also called Porta Senese ) is still in its original state, the Porta Fiorentina has been reconstructed.

Tavarnelle Val di Pesa belonged to Barberino Val d'Elsa as a district until 1893 and became an independent municipality on May 1, 1893. The formerly independent municipalities merged on January 1, 2019 to form the new municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle. In the vote on the municipal merger on November 11 and 12, 2018 in Barberino Val d'Elsa, 67.74% (with 54.35% voter turnout) voted for the merger.
