The Bauer Aktiengesellschaft is a listed construction and engineering company based in the Bavarian town of Schrobenhausen .

Bauer's core business is the production of complex construction pits, foundations and vertical seals as well as the development and manufacture of machines for this. In 2018, the companies of the Bauer Group with around 12,000 employees in around 70 countries recorded a total group output of 1.7 billion euros.

history

In 1790, Sebastian Bauer (under the name Paur ) from Deggendorf , the son of a previous generation of coppersmiths from Osterhofen (Lower Bavaria), bought a coppersmith's shop in Schrobenhausen . For over a century the coppersmith was involved in setting up breweries , doing roofing work with copper and making items for everyday household use.

In 1902, Andreas Bauer drilled an artesian well in Schrobenhausen for the new water house for the railway station in Schrobenhausen , making well construction a new line of business for the company. For his son Karl Bauer, the construction of the central water supply for the city of Schrobenhausen in 1928 was a key project. With this reference he turned the business to a well construction company and was soon active throughout Bavaria with the construction of wells and water supply systems for cities and industrial companies.

Karlheinz Bauer , born in 1928 and a partner since 1953, became sole managing director in 1956 and geared the company towards special civil engineering. The ground anchor was invented two years later on the Bayerischer Rundfunk construction site in Munich . The company then applied for a patent on the construction process and began marketing it internationally. The first construction site abroad was in Switzerland in 1959, the ground anchor was also used here and its success story began. In the 1960s, the construction method was used primarily for the construction of underground trains in numerous cities in Germany.

In 1969, the company began designing and manufacturing an anchor drilling rig, taking its first steps in the field of mechanical engineering. In 1975 the company received its first orders in Libya , Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates . In the period that followed, Bauer Spezialtiefbau expanded its construction activity and machine sales to more and more countries, with a new focus on the Far East from the mid-1980s.

In 1976, the range of machines was expanded to include the BG 7 large rotary drilling rig. The BG series developed into the core area of Bauer Maschinenbau in the following decades. In 1984 the development and construction of the first own diaphragm wall cutter followed. Two years later, Thomas Bauer - with the company since 1984 - became the sole managing director. The internationalization of the Bauer Group in mechanical engineering and special civil engineering took place under his leadership.

In 1990, Bauer and Mourik Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. was founded. From this, after the takeover of FWS Filter- und Wassertechnik in 2002, Bauer Umwelt GmbH developed. In 1992 the Thuringian company Schachtbau Nordhausen GmbH was taken over. The year before, the subsidiary SPESA Spezialbau und Sanierung GmbH was founded together with Schachtbau Nordhausen.

In 1994 Bauer Aktiengesellschaft was founded as an umbrella company, whereupon Deutsche Beteiligungs AG received shares in Bauer AG through a capital increase. In 2001 the restructuring of the Bauer Group began. Bauer Maschinen GmbH with the companies Klemm Bohrtechnik, MAT Mischanlagentechnik, RTG Rammtechnik, Eurodrill, TracMec and PILECO became independent on the market.

Bauer AG went public on July 4, 2006. The company took over German Water and Energy GmbH (GWE for short) in 2007, expanding its business activities to include well technology, water and geothermal energy. There was a realignment of the entire market presence of the company with the three segments Construction, Machinery and Resources.

In the following two years, the mechanical engineering works in Aresing and Nordhausen as well as in Tianjin (China) and Shanghai were expanded, a new factory area with over 34,000 m² of hall space in Edelshausen was inaugurated and a new mechanical engineering plant was opened in Conroe (Texas, USA).

In 2010, milling technology celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Bauer Resources' largest plant- based sewage treatment plant to date was completed in Oman. In 2012, the mark of 10,000 employees worldwide was exceeded for the first time in the course of the year.

This was followed by orders for the foundation work of the future tallest building in the world ( Kingdom Tower ) and in Europe ( Lakhta Center ) and, in 2014, the execution of the company's largest special civil engineering contract in Germany to date: the Schwarzkopf Tunnel bypass project in the Spessart.

In 2015, Bauer celebrated its 225th company anniversary and the largest single order in the company's history was won with the Kesslergrube renovation project in the environmental sector. In 2017, the order was placed for the expansion of the herbal sewage treatment plant in Oman, which was completed in 2010.

Bauer is the world market leader in the manufacture of the entire range of machines for specialist civil engineering. The company can also look back on numerous prestigious start -up projects , such as the Burj Khalifa or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge .

In 2017, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, among others , that Bauer AG had signed up on a list of those interested in building the wall on the border between the United States and Mexico . According to Bauer, however, he is not interested in participating in the construction of the wall.

Group structure

The Group's business is divided into three segments: Construction, Machinery and Resources. The Construction segment offers special foundation engineering processes and carries out foundations, construction pits, cut-off walls and soil improvements worldwide. In the machinery segment, Bauer is the world market leader for equipment for special civil engineering and for the exploration, development and extraction of natural resources. In the Resources segment, Bauer operates in the areas of water, the environment and natural resources.
