Architecture (television broadcast)
Baukunst ( French original title Architectures ) is a documentary series of the channel ARTE , which is broadcast on the slot for "Art and Culture".
Content and production
The ARTE series primarily presents outstanding buildings from the architectural modern of the 20th century. It has been broadcast since 1998 based on an idea by Frédéric Campain and Richard Copans and has 64 episodes in 2016, 59 of which have so far been released on DVD. In the meantime, the series has been supervised by the authors Richard Copans and Stan Neumann. The individual episodes, each dedicated to a building, are 26 to 30 minutes long. The new seasons are currently broadcast every two years.
The buildings are analyzed from a technical, aesthetic and economic point of view. The integration of the buildings into their surroundings is also discussed. Details such as the various planning stages, the design and the room organization are examined and presented using models, animations and archive material. Furthermore, the buildings are compared to classic works of building history. Whenever possible, the architects have their say.
The documentary series is co-produced or financed by ARTE France and the French production company Les Films d'Ici, as well as by various French museums. Cooperation partners are the Musée du Louvre, le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication (Direction de l'architecture et du patrimoine), le center Pompidou, la Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine , le musée d'Orsay and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. More recent episodes were also co-produced by German broadcasters.
The series is also available as a DVD collection in 10 parts. In addition to the German and French versions, there is also a version in English.
