Bay City is a city in the US state of Michigan and is 190 km north of Detroit on Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron . Bay City is the county seat of Bay County .

The city has an area of 29.3 km², of which 27.0 km² are land and 2.4 km² are water. The Saginaw River flows through the urban area .

history

At the beginning of the 19th century there was a small town called Lower Saginaw in the area of what is now Bay City (today's Saginaw was then called Upper Saginaw). Even the French legal scholar and historian Alexis de Tocqueville visited this village on his travels in the 1830s. Originally there were several small towns and villages on both sides of the Saginaw River, including Bay City, West Bay City and Salzburg. In 1905, West Bay City and Bay City were united to form Bay City. For the 100th anniversary in April 2005, representatives of the US House of Representatives , the state government of Michigan and local figures attended. In the late 19th century, Bay City was a very important city in the logging industry, as Michigan had a lot of forests at the time, especially white pine ( Pinus strobus ). These were processed in several sawmills into timber for " balloon houses " and ships. In 1864, Bay City's Sage-McGraw sawmill was the largest in the world. Bay City was also famous for its shipyards. With the destruction of the forests, not only the sawmills slowly disappeared, but also shipbuilding, with the exception of one company ( Defoe Boat & Motor Co. ), which also closed in 1972. But in 1969 two brothers founded the company Gougeon Brothers , which by 1973 sold more ice sailboats than any other company in the United States.

Industry

Bay City used to be an important industrial city. Until 1983 had rail crane manufacturers Industrial Brownhoist based here. Today GM Powertrain (861 employees), Dow Corning and SC Johnson & Son are located in Bay City.

Museums

The Bay County Historical Museum (formerly the Museum of the Great Lakes ) houses historical artifacts and manages the oldest house in Bay County, the Trombley House, named after the Tromblée brothers from France .

Personalities

Emil Annecke (1823–1888), who emigrated with his brother Fritz Anneke (1818–1872) in 1849 as a so-called Forty-Eighter after the failed March Revolution from Germany to the United States and co-founded the Republican Party in Michigan, settled in 1874 as a lawyer and Real estate agent settled in Bay City and died there on October 27, 1888. His house was on the corner of North Grant Street and 10th Street.
