be was a funk band from Hanover who also used stylistic elements of trip-hop , jazz , soul and sometimes rock in their music .

Band history

In February 1993, Malte Hagemeister ( guitar , vocals ), Daniel Simon ( bass ), Florian “Flow” Scheffler ( trumpet , keyboard ), Daniel Jo Krüger ( drums , didgeridoo ), Sascha Schmidt ( percussion ) and Christian Tesche aka easy met in Hanover t ( turntables ) together as a session band . After it had been decided that the group (with the exception of Tesche) wanted to stay together, no time should be wasted on discussions in finding a name, which is why the "be" thrown into the room quickly manifested and subsequently with a meaning, namely a joyful invitation to affirm life , was provided. Gregor Blumenthal was brought on board as a full-time singer and rapper in February 1994 and made his live debut with him on March 19, 1994 .

In June 1994, won be the Radio FFN contest " Local Heroes ", had participated in the 700 bands. The prize was a record deal with EMI and a studio production directed by Fury in the Slaughterhouse producer Jens Krause . The album Bold was released in 1996 and contained the respectable hit Black Rain . It brought the band a Comet nomination for "Best Newcomer".

In the months that followed, be gave almost 250 concerts across Europe, including supporting acts by David Bowie , Chumbawamba and Jazzmatazz . At some point during this time, Krüger decided to continue his architecture studies, which is why various guest musicians took his place, in the same way as Tesche's waiver had previously been compensated. Over time, Andie Linkert (drums) and Samon Kawamura (turntables, raps) emerged as quasi-members. In order to benefit from the surge in popularity of a tour with the label colleagues of Mr. Ed Jumps the Gun , Bold was offered in a new edition with four remixes and a different cover. Richer in money reserves, know-how and reputation , they set up their own studio for pre-production and took on jobs with established artists such as Bobby Brown and Jazzkantine . The pre-produced new songs were passed on to various producers, for example Mousse T. and Ingo Krauss ( Die Fantastischen Vier , Die Ärzte ) for the final touches. This is how the second work, Orange , came into being, which appeared in autumn 1999. The title Orange is explained by a fondly remembered incident of the band: In 1997, all members performed at the summer festivals (the highlight was “ Rock am Ring ”) with orange-colored hair combined with light effects. It was also the unusual color of a vitamin paste that Singer Blumenthal liked very much as a child.

Like the band, Mr. Ed Jumps the Gun, which has since become friends, be did not move into the new millennium. After the dissolution, Malte Hagemeister established himself in Hamburg as a musician (best known: Urban Delights), producer , songwriter , advertising and film music composer and clip director. Florian Scheffler ended up in Berlin , where, in addition to his work for the TV club in the PR area , he runs a studio and is involved in various music projects. The first solo album, Soul , was released in 2013 under the name DDIY . Electrified. (featuring Lili Sommerfeld). Gregor Blumenthal devoted himself to smaller singing commissions, his passion, acting. He used his musical talent as a composer for stage music. He, who suffered from a respiratory disease, died at the age of 37 on December 7, 2007.
