Cross yourself, stranger (original title: Straniero… fatti il segno della Croce! ) Is the first spaghetti western by the Italian trash director Demofilo Fidani . The film, shot in 1967, passed the Italian censorship authorities on August 16, 1968 and was premiered in German-speaking countries on August 20, 1986 on private television. It was later released on videotape.

action

The chief of the bandits, Donovan, is injured in a bank robbery; his brother lives in the town of White City. Both cause fear and terror there: one threatens the people, the other collects the sums of money that people pay to protect against the former. With some bounty on offer for these people, the gunslinger Frank comes to White City; he also has to avenge the murder of a friend. With the help of the cripple Zoppo, he can gradually free the city from the bandits.

criticism

According to critic Christian Keßler , the “moderate” film is the first to create the typical Fidani film universe: “People run aimlessly through the streets, children play with spinning tops”, unbelievably “confused storylines”, “optical extravagances”, “incessantly rumbling” and music . He sums up: These films are "often referred to as the worst westerns of all time". Play Cinema judged less harshly, one shouldn't blame the director for the rough execution compared to his great role models, because he doesn't pass it off as more than it is. Ettore Manni surprises as a casual cowboy.

Remarks

The assistant camera and director was Aristide Massaccesi (later better known under his stage name Joe D'Amato ), who also played a supporting role. Fabio Testi also plays a supporting role as a gang member in Donovan's first film.

The gross profit in Italy was 101 million lire .
