politics

From 1995 to 1999 Mikfeld was chairman of the Jusos in the SPD in the district of Western Westphalia. In 1999, Mikfeld was the only candidate to be elected Juso federal chairman at the Leipzig Federal Congress with 50.86 percent of the vote. During his time as Juso boss, Mikfeld sharply criticized the SPD and the Jusos: “Polemically exaggerated, the mutation of the Jusos into a bizarre formation of politically irrelevant cliques, career-hungry slimes, early Fordist steelworker romanticism, half-hearted eco-social democratic reformism and regionally specific Socialisms ”, quoted the Frankfurter Rundschau Mikfeld. The Süddeutsche Zeitung commented on Mikfeld's election: “The Jusos, of all people, should the impulse for a modernist left come from? There is much resistance to this thought. But Benjamin Mikfeld, Juso chairman for almost a year, is starting a serious attempt to get the Jusos from yesterday straight into tomorrow. ”At the end of his term as federal chairman of the Jusos, the response was divided. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger spoke of an "oath of revelation" and a "pile of broken glass": "Mikfeld did not manage to reconcile the two warring Juso wings."

From 1995 to 2003, Mikfeld was a member of the SPD party executive .

In 2001, Mikfeld applied for the mandate as a Bundestag candidate of the SPD in the newly created Bundestag constituency of Herne - Bochum II , but defeated Gerd Bollmann with 71:79 votes at a constituency assembly with delegates from Herne and Bochum .

job

After studying social science at the Ruhr University Bochum , which Mikfeld graduated with a diploma in 2001 , he initially worked as a project manager at SCI Verkehr . In 2003 the political and management consultant switched to BBDO Consulting , where he was responsible for public affairs and public communication.

In 2004 Benjamin Mikfeld became office manager of the SPD federal manager and worked in changing positions in the SPD party headquarters ( Willy-Brandt-Haus ) until 2011 . From 2005 he was head of the planning team, and in 2008 head of the policy and analysis department.

In 2011 he left the SPD party headquarters and announced that he would set up his own political strategy institute. According to press reports, he should coordinate a red-green “think tank”. “In his own words, he himself is happy to get out of the hamster wheel of daily politics with the project,” said Tagesspiegel, who went on to write: “The two parties want the new strategy institute - other participants speak more modestly of a 'coordination office' make up for an advantage that the conservative camp has in their view. Because there different think tanks play, the balls to each other, as Mikfeld explains. 'The conservative side is better positioned. We have to create equality of arms. '”In 2012, Denkwerk Demokratie eV, one of the two managing directors with equal rights, presented its first working paper entitled“ New Thinking ”.

From 2014 to 2018 he was head of the policy department of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs . Since 2018 he has been head of the Department of Management, Planning and Strategy at the Federal Ministry of Finance .
