Benno Ziegler (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benno Ziegler (born December 16, 1891 in Munich ; † January 22, 1965 ibid) was a German musicologist , composer , conductor , librarian and ministerial official.

Life

Benno Ziegler was born in Munich on December 16, 1891, the son of Hans Ziegler, who was a violinist at the Munich court orchestra, and Katharina Ziegler, née Göttfried. The family includes the brother Georg, who was born in 1893 and died in 1910, and his sister Johanna (1894–1970).

Ziegler spent his youth in Munich, where he attended elementary school in Solln and the Royal Theresiengymnasium . After graduating from high school, he began studying law in the winter semester of 1912/13 at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, which he broke off a year later to begin studying musicology and philosophy there, where he was among other things Adolf Sandberger , Theodor Kroyer and Eugen Schmitz studied. During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich .

During the First World War he registered as a so-called “ one-year-old volunteer ” for military service in the Royal Bavarian Army and was employed as head of the X-ray station in the front section of the war hospital department in Roubaix (France). After this service, he continued his musicological studies, which he won in 1916 with a thesis on Placidus von Camerloher, thanks to the support of Sandberger, as a Dr. phil. completed. From 1919 to 1921 he took over the management of the Munich Citizens Hall Choir .

In 1920 Ziegler took up a position as a librarian at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, which served him as preparation for the examination for the higher library service. A year later - after passing the state examination - he was accepted into the civil service and changed to the state librarian at the University Library of Würzburg , where he stayed for six years before returning to Munich in 1928 after being promoted to the state librarian at the Bavarian State Library.

After the handover of power to the National Socialists in the German Reich in January 1933, Ziegler was transferred to the Bamberg State Library because, as a result of the Reichstag fire on the night of February 27-28, 1933, he made the statement that “this Hitler […] was a megalomaniac idiot "was. Due to the subsequent denunciation by his librarian colleague Rudolf Kummer , the management of the Bavarian State Library, which Ziegler was benevolent, felt compelled to send him to Bamberg in order to prevent further suspicions. There, however, Ziegler was first retired and dismissed as a civil servant in 1934 on the basis of the “ Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service ” passed on April 1st .

In the following years Ziegler took over the position of church musician at his home parish St. Johann Baptist in Munich-Solln and, after completing a supplementary course, passed the A-examination for church musicians. From 1937 he was employed as a church musician at St. Benno in Munich until the church was completely destroyed in 1944. In the last year of the war, Ziegler was drafted to watch in a medical station in Munich-Solln. As early as July 1, 1945, due to an order from the American military government, he was reinstated in the civil service as senior librarian at the Bavarian State Library in Munich. He only held this position for a few weeks, as he was appointed music advisor to the Bavarian Ministry of Culture , where he stayed until his retirement in 1957. In addition to this activity, Ziegler worked sporadically as a church musician at St. Johann and as choir regent at St. Benno.

Benno Ziegler died of kidney failure childless and single on January 22nd, 1965 in Munich and was buried in the Solln cemetery.
