Benno von Massow (Lieutenant General, 1827)
Benno Alexander Emil von Massow (born April 22, 1827 in Züllichau , † February 22, 1904 in Niederlößnitz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .
Life
origin
He came from the noble family von Massow who immigrated to Pomerania and was a son of Friedrich von Massow (1786-1859) and his wife Karoline, née von Sydow (1775-1848). His father was a Prussian major a. D. and Mr. on Schmarse (Manor Schmarse, Züllichau-Schwiebus district ). His brother Hermann (1812–1881) became a politician and chief forest master of the Prussian court, the other brother Wilhelm (1815–1899) later rose to the position of Prussian general of the infantry .
Military career
Massow graduated from high school in his hometown and joined the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on July 21, 1845 . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on September 12, 1848 . During his military career, Massow took part in the war against Austria in 1866 and in the war against France in 1870/71 . From December 11, 1877 to December 5, 1883 he was commander of the 3rd Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 50 and was then promoted to major general to commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade . Massow was released from this command on May 13, 1887 and given the character of lieutenant general with a pension at disposal .
After his death he was buried in the New Cemetery of the Kötzschenbroda parish . His wife, who died in Kipsdorf in 1909 , was also transferred to Kötzschenbroda and buried there.
Awards
On September 23, 1884, Massov was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with oak leaves and swords on a ring. He was also the holder of the Crown Order II. Class as well as the Commander II. Class of the Ducal Saxony-Ernestine House Order and the Lippe House Order I Class with Swords. He received the Prussian Service Award Cross , the Lippe Military Merit Medal and the Iron Cross 2nd class.
family
He married on October 23, 1856 in Glatz with Friederike Freiin von Toll (1836–1909), a daughter of the later Lieutenant General Karl von Toll . The marriage had five children:
