Bent Fabricius-Bjerre (born December 7, 1924 in Frederiksberg ; † July 28, 2020 ), better known internationally as Bent Fabric , was a Danish pianist and composer .

Life

From an early age, Bent Fabricius-Bjerre was active as a jazz musician and made numerous recordings with his band for the Swedish Metronome Records , which were among the first jazz records in Scandinavia. After the Second World War he studied piano at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music for three years, among other things. He then founded a music magazine publisher and continued to play in various jazz and dance bands. He was also active as a professional composer, switching more and more from jazz to pop music. He has composed the music for numerous Danish films over the years. In 1950 he took over the record label Metronome and worked as a music producer until his death.

Soon he got his own show Omkring et flygel (All about the piano) on Danish television , to which he invited musical guests and played himself. A special feature was the tune he composed for the show (under the pseudonym Frank Björn), which he performed with his guest at the end.

German single by Alley Cat , 1962

This melody became a world hit when it was released internationally in 1962 under the title Alley Cat . In the USA alone, the piano instrumental was a million seller and reached number 7 on the pop charts. In addition, Bent Fabric, as he called himself internationally, was awarded a Grammy for it. The song is still one of the most played Danish songs in the world today. There were also some successful sung versions of the song, among others by Bobby Rydell , Peggy Lee (both English) and Siw Malmkvist (Black Cat Stanislaus) .

The follow-up single Chicken Feed also hit the US charts and the album Alley Cat reached the top 20.

Fabricius-Bjerre was also a musician for the Danish royal family and played on official occasions, including the wedding of Queen Margrethe in 1967.

Internationally known is also his theme song of one of the most successful Danish film exports, the Olsen Gang (see: Olsen-banden (piece of music) ). In later years he had a big hit in his home country with the title Jukebox (2003), which also came to Germany via the Coca-Cola advertisement, and the follow-up single Shake . Both were top 10 hits in the Danish sales hit parades and even came in at number 5 and 2 in the airplay charts.

Most recently he was on the board of several companies and theaters in Denmark. For example from Multitone A / S, Børnefonden, Betty Nansen Teatret, Bellevue Teatret, Metalvarefabrikken Baltic A / S, Scandinavien Medical Supply A / S and Zimmer of Scandinavia A / S.

In autumn 2019, Fabricius-Bjerre was diagnosed with leukemia , of which he died on July 28, 2020.
