Amber

geography

The village of Bernstein, two kilometers southwest of Waier, is 680 m above sea level on the Eisenberg. The border with Bavaria is about one kilometer away.

history

The beginnings of amber are likely to go back to the time of the Thirty Years War . The first mention of the place in 1670 was called "zum Bernstein". In that year Leopold Konstantin von Wiedersperg founded a farm here. At least two houses should have existed much earlier. In 1775 the rulers in Bernstein owned a river hut with potash production .

In 1785 there were nine houses with 76 residents. From 1837 the land of the former Meierhof was repeatedly leased. In 1839 there were 106 and in 1924 132 inhabitants.

The Bernsteiner Forsthaus was the former Meierhof and belonged to the Ronsperg domain .

In the 1950s, amber was destroyed because of its proximity to the state border. The place became the location of a company of the Czechoslovak Pohraniční stráž (border guard). Today only the empty barracks buildings remain.

religion

Bernstein was parish in Waier. Before 1786 it belonged to the parish of Muttersdorf .

Therapeutic facility

Komunita Mědvědí kámen

After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, drug addiction also became a problem in the Czech Republic. In the years around 1995 a number of centers for the treatment of drug addicts were set up , including the Terapeutická komunita Medvědí kámen in the former amber. Terapeutická komunita means therapeutic community. Mědvědí kámen means bear stone in German and is onomatopoeic based on amber.

The head of the Komunita Mědvědí kámen is Magister Pavla Vondrová. The community treats young people aged 16 to 32 years. There are 16 places available. The duration of treatment is individually tailored, up to 12 months. It deals with the dependence on illegal drugs, which is connected with social problems up to criminality. The adolescents must voluntarily request treatment and be abstinent for at least 7 days before starting treatment. You must not have any physical or mental illness that requires medical treatment.

A one-story house and several farm buildings are available for treatment. Sheep, goats and chickens are kept and vegetables are grown. The treatment uses work and group therapy , artistic activity, exercise, yoga and one-on-one interviews.

The Komunita Mědvědí kámen has been struggling with financial difficulties since it was founded. It is actually financed by the Ministry of Health, but the money transfers from this Ministry sometimes fail.
