Bernd Wiedmann

Bernd Wiedmann (born July 10, 1942 in Weingarten ; † April 8, 2009 in Flims , Canton of Graubünden ) was a German lawyer and local politician for the CDU .

education and profession

In 1962 Bernd Wiedmann passed his Abitur at the New Language High School in Hechingen . After his military service, he studied law at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen from 1964 to 1968 and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD .

Political activity

In the autumn of 1971 he was elected to the local council of the city of Hechingen as a member of the CDU , but resigned from his office on December 31, 1973, as he moved to Sipplingen . From 1972 he was an official in the interior administration of the state of Baden-Württemberg. In 1977 he was elected district administrator for the Lake Constance district. He took over the office in January 1978 from his predecessor Martin Herzog , who was elected Lord Mayor of Friedrichshafen . When Martin Herzog was appointed Minister for Economy, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Technology in the state government led by Prime Minister Lothar Späth , Wiedmann stood for the CDU in the mayoral election in Friedrichshafen. He was elected for the first time on March 10, 1985 and the second time on March 14, 1993. During his sixteen-year tenure, Wiedmann focused on numerous areas. Since the population of Friedrichshafen increased by around 5,000 during this period, 20 building areas were developed and around 5,900 residential units were built. An important source of investment was the Zeppelin Foundation , which not only contributed to the further development of ZF Friedrichshafen into an internationally important company, but also promoted social projects such as the city hospital and the club culture. The development of the infrastructure with the construction of the new exhibition building, the construction of the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus , the expansion of the B 31 including the bypass and the promotion of the airport were central measures of his term of office. In 1990 Friedrichshafen signed a town partnership with Delitzsch in Saxony .

On March 11, 2001, he was not re-elected as Lord Mayor. His successor in office was the SPD candidate Josef Büchelmeier . After being voted out of office, he worked as a consultant for a law firm in Fürth.

From 1989 until his death, Wiedmann was a member of the district council of the Lake Constance district.

Other offices, honors and awards

In his role as Lord Mayor, Wiedmann was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ZF Friedrichshafen from 1985 . He held this office until 2003. In addition to Max Mugler, the then managing director of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH, Bernd Wiedmann played a key role in the decision to develop and build the Zeppelin NT from 1989 onwards .

Since 1988 he has also been chairman of the supervisory board of Messe Friedrichshafen . He was also a member of the economic committee of the Association of Friends of the University of Tübingen and chairman of the Christian Hospice Foundation in Friedrichshafen. In 2008 he received the Liebenau Foundation's Decoration of Honor for his commitment to the Hospice Foundation .

For his services to the city of Friedrichshafen, Bernd Wiedmann was awarded the city's ring of honor on May 16, 2001, after there had been a discussion about the quality of the honor between the CDU and the other parties.

In 1992 he was made an honorary senator of the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen.

Family and private

Bernd Wiedmann was married to his wife Hella for 36 years and has a daughter. Since 1982 he lived in Efrizweiler , which belongs to the Friedrichshafen suburb of Kluftern .

He died in 2009 at the age of 66 as a result of a skiing accident in Flims, Graubünden.
