Adolf Bernhard Rabenhorst , von Rabenhorst since 1856 , (born May 29, 1801 in Leipzig , † June 14, 1873 in Hoflößnitz ) was a Saxon Minister of War and General of the Infantry .

Life

origin

Rabenhorst came from a middle-class background. His parents were the bookseller Christian Gottlieb Rabenhorst (1769-1808) and his wife Charlotte Juliane, née Wappler (1779-1802). She was a daughter of the businessman Christian Heinrich Wappler.

Military career

In 1816/23 he received a military science training at the Dresden Military Academy with subsequent appointment as a junker. In 1840 Rabenhorst was promoted to captain and in 1846 to major while at the same time being appointed Saxon military representative at the Bundestag in Frankfurt am Main . In 1849 he was promoted to colonel and appointed minister of war . In this function, Rabenhorst, together with the commander of the Prussian auxiliary troops Friedrich von Waldersee, had the Dresden May Uprising put down. In the same year he was promoted to major general , in 1850 to lieutenant general . Also in 1849 Rabenhorst was awarded the Military Order of St. Heinrich .

In 1856 Rabenhorst was raised to the hereditary nobility by King John of Saxony . Years of building and modernizing the Saxon army followed . As a member of the entire Ministry of the Kingdom of Saxony under Friedrich Ferdinand von Beust , he led the Saxon army on Austria's side in the German War . After the defeat in the Battle of Königgrätz , he resigned from his offices in October 1866.

Rabenhorst retired to Hoflößnitz, where he devoted himself to his passion, mathematical and technical studies. In 1872 the Saxon king gave him the character of general of the infantry. In the following year 1873 Rabenhorst died in Hoflößnitz.

Rabenhorst married Luise Hörnig (born April 14, 1817, † August 13, 1865) in Dresden. The couple had several children:

Rabenhorst was related to Horst von Metzsch .
