The diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato was established in 465 by Pope Hilarius as the diocese of Luni . On 21 July 1465 the was the diocese of Luni the diocese Sarzana affiliated. The diocese of Luni and Sarzana was attached to the diocese of Brugnato on November 25, 1820 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution Sollicita quam .

On January 12, 1929, the diocese of Luni, Sarzana and Brugnato was renamed the Diocese of Luni o La Spezia, Sarzana and Brugnato . The diocese of Luni o La Spezia, Sarzana and Brugnato was renamed on August 4, 1975 in the Diocese of La Spezia, Sarzana and Brugnato . On September 30, 1986, the diocese of La Spezia, Sarzana and Brugnato was renamed by the Congregation for the Bishops with the decree Instantibus votis in the diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato .
