history

The origins of the diocese lie in the Mission sui juris of Rajaburi, which was founded in 1930. Salesians from Don Bosco had come to the region three years earlier and were continuing the missionary work begun by the Paris Mission . In 1934 the mission was elevated to the status of an Apostolic Prefecture, and in 1941 to an Apostolic Vicariate. In 1965 it became the Bangnokhuek diocese, which was renamed the Ratburi diocese in 1966. In 1969, the southern part of the diocese was split off as the Surat Thani diocese .
