action

The two sisters Mary Beth and Pris Connolly get together after the death of their mother in their hometown, the small fishing village Easter Cove in Maine. Pris has been looking after her sick mother for a year, but now she can't wait to leave town. The adventurous sister Mary Beth left Easter Cove earlier. On the day of her funeral, Mary Beth, the younger of the two, learns that the mother, who owned and ran a fish shop, only left debts. There is no way to pay the overdue rent. On the night of the funeral, she tries to digest the bad news in a bar and meets a stranger by the name of Gorski. Many drinks later she goes home with him. She discovers bloody clothes in his car and what looks like human hair. All she wants is to run away, but she feels trapped, storms out of the darkness with a harpoon and stabs Gorski fatally in the neck.

It's not really self-defense, and it's not really murder. So she has to cover it up somehow. With the help of a knife from the fishmonger's shop, she and her sister work the corpse so that it fits into a box and then throw it into the sea. A few days later they learned that the police had found a body that was washed ashore, but it was not Gorski, but one of the girls of the businesswoman Enid Nora Devlin, who runs a bed and breakfast that actually has a Brothel is. Like town matriarchs Gail Maguire, Doreen Burke, and Susie Gallagher, Enid was one of Mary Beth's and Pris's mother's best friends. The inexperienced officer Justin Brennan opens an investigation after the body is found. Everything is not what it seems at Easter Cove.

production

Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy directed and wrote the script. It is always her feature film debut. After studying film at Wesleyan University, Krudy received a postgraduate scholarship from the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy . For films such as Black Swan , Ruby Sparks and Cowboys & Aliens , Krudy worked as assistant camera to Oscar-nominated cameraman Matthew Libatique . She later worked at Annapurna Pictures for Megan Ellison and as the company's creative researcher. She has also worked with directors such as Bennett Miller , David O. Russell , Angela Robinson and Chris Cunningham .

A native of Gloucester , Massachusetts, an important center of the fishing industry and a popular summer resort, Savage Cole had worked in seafood restaurants. Krudy is from Ohio, but her mother was born in Maine, which is why they used to spend the summers in a small town called Groton Long Point. The two women met when Savage Cole was working as a camerawoman for a music video and Krudy as her camera assistant. They were also attending Wesleyan University at the same time, but were in different grades.

The roles of sisters Priscilla 'Pris' and Mary Beth Connolly were cast with Sophie Lowe and Morgan Saylor . Margo Martindale plays Enid Nora Devlin, a businesswoman who runs the local bed and breakfast called Ocean View, which is actually a brothel. Gayle Rankin plays Alexis, a prostitute who works for Enid. Officer Justin Brennan, the young local police officer, is played by Will Brittai .

The film was shown for the first time in the US Narrative Competition on April 26, 2019 at the Tribeca Film Festival . In September 2019 the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Contemporary World Cinema section. In November 2019 there was a screening at the AFI Film Festival . In January 2020 it was screened at the Palm Springs International Film Festival .

Reviews

The film has so far convinced 99 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.7 out of a possible 10 points.

Kate hereditary land of Indie Wire writes Bridget Savage Coles and Danielle Krudys fascinating directorial debut was similar to a crime comedy of the Coen brothers clocked by a bloody murder up to the bag full of money and announce to the arrival of the next great filmmaker duos in the world of independent film . Stars like Margo Martindale could shine in it alongside emerging talents like Morgan Saylor and Sophie Lowe .

Adam Patterson of Film Pulse says Coles and Krudy's darkly comedic Film Noir is fun, sincere, and consistently suspenseful, and represents an incredible step in the careers of two talented directors. The rural area and pitch-black humor that is felt throughout will undoubtedly evoke memories of Fargo for many viewers , but Cole and Krudy would also have created something unique when the sisters discover that there is much more boiling beneath the surface of their little village than one can imagine.

Caryn James of The Hollywood Reporter thinks that the film title could therefore instead of Blow the Man Down (English for " Blow the man away") be Blow the Lid Off (" Blow the lid off "), since it was in the past , but also current secrets that are hidden under the picturesque, picture-perfect surface of the town, would be revealed. James writes about Todd Banhazl's camerawork in this clever, suspenseful and sometimes darkly comical film, that he captures the foggy appearance of the coast and the cold city, in which the snow never seems to melt and the streets are constantly wet. He also highlights the set design by Jasmine Balou Jones , which is responsible for a large part of the authentic small-town flair.

Variety's Owen Gleiberman explains that a "realistic" crime thriller like Blow the Man Down works in such a way that it is not so much about the twists and turns as, in this case, exposing the organized depravity that is rooted in the old world of New England . The women of this community, played by Annette O'Toole , June Squibb and Marceline Hugot with frozen souls and a rather puritanic cheerfulness, have known each other for decades and form a small-town matriarchy, which Gleiberman describes as " Thornton Wilder meets Suspiria ".

Michael Kohl from the film service thinks that Savage Cole and Krudy have mastered the suspense principle so well that the actresses Morgan Saylor and Sophie Lowe, as the disagreed sister couple, are cheered all the time. Even if the filmmakers didn't tell anything new, when they set their sights on the double standards and the brutal will to survive in America's provinces, the film with its strong female characters found a refreshing approach to the subject.
