Blue Mounds is located in south-central Wisconsin, in the western suburbs of its capital, Madison . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois on the Mississippi is 100 km to the southwest.
The geographical coordinates of Blue Mounds are 43 ° 01'03 "north latitude and 89 ° 49'56" west longitude. The municipality extends over an area of 2.36 km². The place is located east of Blue Mounds mainly in neighboring Iowa County lying Blue Mounds State Park .

A rail trail for hikers and cyclists runs parallel to the US 18 / US 151 road through the city on the route of a former railway line of the Chicago and North Western Railway with the Military Ridge State Trail . In winter, the hiking trail can also be used with snowmobiles.
