Monona is located in south central Wisconsin, in the southern suburbs of its capital, Madison . The city lies between the south-east bank of Lake Monona and the north bank of Upper Mud Lake and on both sides of the Yahara River , which connects the two lakes , a tributary of the Rock River, which flows into the Mississippi in the neighboring state of Illinois . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and is 150 km west-southwest.
The geographical coordinates of Monona are 43 ° 03'44 "north latitude and 89 ° 20'02" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 8.68 km².
The center of Madison, which borders the urban area of Monona to the north, is 11.9 km away, on the opposite bank of Lake Monona. Other neighboring towns are Cottage Grove (13.9 km east), McFarland (8.8 km south-southeast) and Fitchburg (14.1 km southwest).

The most important road connections are US Highways 12 and 18 , which run in a west-east direction through the south of the city on a common section of route . US Highway 51 runs along the eastern city limits . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
The southern city limits form a railway line of the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad (WSOR), a regional ( Class II ) freight transport company. The only passenger in the region is from Chicago circulating to the West Coast Empire Builder from Amtrak , which stops in nearby Madison.
