DeForest is located in south-central Wisconsin, in the northern suburbs of its capital, Madison . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and is 165 km southwest.

Interstate Highways 39 and 90 run along the western edge of the town on a shared stretch of road . The US Highway 51 forms the eastern city limits. Wisconsin State Highway 19 runs through the southern industrial estate in a west-east direction . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A Canadian Pacific Railway runs north-south through DeForest. The only passenger in the region is circulating from Chicago to the West Coast Empire Builder from Amtrak , which stops in Madison.
The nearest airport is Dane County Regional Airport in Madison (11.4 miles south).
