occupation

Bodo - Ordinary People is a German youth - comedy with science fiction Bonds in 1989 by director Gloria Behrens . It uses elements from the American comedy film LISA - The bright madness .

action

The 14-year-old Bodo Blinker is a nerd as he stands in the book: intelligent and gifted, but a bespectacled and thin outsider. At school he usually stands apart, has neither friends nor girlfriend and has to endure the teasing of his classmates - especially those of his fellow student Alex . His career-obsessed parents are of no help either. They almost only take care of their jobs and send Bodo to the psychiatrist Dr. Frank because of the alleged lack of self-confidence . Ultimately, he should become the son as they always imagined him to be.

The introverted Bodo has finally tired of being measured against the ideals of others and dare (inspired by a school experiment with cloned pets) a really utopian enterprise: using his computer, an ice cream and its technical abilities, he tinkers a double, who all Possesses properties that it lacks. Despite adverse conditions, the impossible finally succeeds and before him Bodo 2 stands with all the desired characteristics.

After a few teething problems, in which Bodo 2 even throws the original out of the parental home, the boys get together and successfully begin to freshen up Bodo's dreary everyday life. In Bodo's role, the clone surprises parents with unimagined martial arts and dance interludes, shows top mental and sporting achievements in school and demolishes psychiatric practice to express his self-confidence. As a result, Bodo's reputation rises enormously and he finally gets closer to his great love: classmate Nova , who sings in Alex's school band.

But the game of confusion also has disadvantages: Bodo 2 constantly needs energy, which he gets by eating spinach , among other things . He is also unable to feel emotions such as happiness, joy or love and therefore wants a heart from his "creator" Bodo. The parents - primarily Ms. Blinker - on the other hand, are very confused by the two identical but opposing Bodos and become more and more desperate. Worst of all, Bodo accidentally hacked into the computer program of the insurance company where his father works to create his clone . This caused a big IT chaos, which is why the two awkward detectives Nicky and Max are hired to solve the case. They soon discover Bodo and his clone.

The investigative duo realized that Bodo's invention was valuable and a patent could bring them millions. To this end, they kidnap Bodo 2 through a mix-up (clone and original have previously swapped outfits) - exactly at the moment when Bodo wants to bring his doppelganger together with Nova after a band rehearsal in order to lure him out of feelings in a last attempt. The two follow Nicky and Max in the car of Bodo's mother, whereby chance benefits them: In the mistaken belief of his greatest wish, Bodo 2 steers the kidnapper's car into a candy store, because he sees a gingerbread heart there as a real one and wants to have it. Bodo and Nova can overwhelm Nicky and Max, free the clone safely and finally avert the danger for him.

In the end, Nova and Bodo become a couple and say goodbye to Bodo 2, who wants to see something of the world and goes on a journey. In the last scene you can also see that because of these events, both Mr. and Mrs. Blinker as well as Nicky and Max are now seeking psychiatric treatment from Doctor Frank.

criticism

"A miserably staged youth comedy that copies Hollywood films, adopts prefabricated clichés without distancing themselves and largely sinks into slapstick and ridiculous puns."

“'Bodo' plays with the child's fantasy of the friend who belongs to you all by yourself. But like the classic sorcerer's apprentice, the computer freak Bodo gets a lot out of control. Gloria Behrens made a brisk, imaginative film for a young audience, spiced up with gadgets and genre ingredients (car chase, cake fight). [...] Thankfully, 'Bodo' is not a film with typically German cheerfulness, but a children's fantasy filmed in English and aimed at the international film market. Stressed adolescents with computer preferences can be found between Tokyo and Toronto. 'Bodo' shows that nowhere can the computer replace parenting. No more and no less."

this and that

  • Although “Bodo” is a German production, the film was shot entirely in English - obviously because of the British actors in the youthful roles. When the film was then broadcast in 1993 under the title “ The Wiz Kid ” in the United States , it was curiously enough that it was dubbed again in English.
  • Almost all the German actors appearing in the film synchronized themselves. The Austrian Andreas Vitasek, on the other hand, was voiced by Arne Elsholtz (who also synchronized the Blinkers' house robot), while Tom Selleck - standard voice Norbert Langer cabaret artist Richard Rogler lent his voice. Björn Schalla, then 15 years old, dubbed the two Forbes brothers in one of his first major speaking roles.
  • The rhythm and style of the soundtrack for the film can be assigned to the music of the 1980s. You can hear Gianna Nannini , Camouflage , Taco and Huey Lewis, among others . The theme song for the film is " Baby (Your love inside) " and is sung by the singer Anna-Lucy . The piece was written by Kambiz Giahi , who also wrote several pieces of music for other TV productions and also sang the duet “ Muscles ” with Anna-Lucy .
  • When Nova and Bodo say goodbye to their journey at Bodo 2 station, you can see that he is driving off in a train towards " Herzfeld ". The city is fictional and is supposed to be an allusion to the fact that the clone longs for a heart. In fact, there are three places in Germany - but not a single one has its own train station.
  • Forbes twins Martin and Gary haven't made a movie since “Bodo”. The same applies to the German Narcisa Kukavica in her only film role to date. She won this at a casting that the youth magazine " Bravo " organized at the time.
  • The broadcaster ZDF , in whose program the film has so far only shown, took part in the production.
