Borovnica (German Franzdorf ) is the name of a small municipality in Slovenia , which consists of the villages Borovnica (Franzdorf), Breg pri Borovnici (Rann bei Franzdorf), Brezovica pri Borovnici (Latschenberg), Dol pri Borovnici (Thal bei Franzdorf), Dražica ( Draschitz), Laze pri Borovnici (Lassach bei Franzdorf), Lašče (Laschitz), Niževec (Nischevetz), Ohonica, Pako (Pekel), Pristava (Meyerhof) and Zabočevo (Sabetzau). The municipality with approx. 3,800 inhabitants is located around 20 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Ljubljana (Ljubljana). It is one of the 193 municipalities that Slovenia is divided into.

The Catholic Church in Borovnica, in which around 60% of the population are Catholic, is consecrated to St. Margaret and belongs to the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.

The 561 m long double-storey Franzdorfer Viaduct of the Südbahngesellschaft , which led from Vienna to the port city of Trieste , was once known as the most beautiful viaduct in Europe . The viaduct was completely destroyed with the exception of small remains during the Second World War .
