Boxing at the Mediterranean Games
Boxing competitions have been held every four years at the Mediterranean Games since 1951 (exception: the 11th games took place in 1991, the 12th were held two years later, in 1993. Since then, they have been held every four years). They are organized by AIBA . The first tournament took place in the Egyptian city of Alexandria . Above all, nations that border the Mediterranean take part . Women's and junior competitions have not yet been held.
Participating Nations
- Africa : Egypt , Algeria , Libya , Morocco , Tunisia
- Asia : Lebanon , Syria
- Europe : Albania , Andorra , Bosnia and Herzegovina , France , Greece , Italy , Kosovo , Croatia , Malta , Monaco , Montenegro , San Marino , Serbia , Slovenia , Spain , Turkey , Cyprus
- The only country that is located on the Mediterranean Sea and is not allowed to participate in the Games is Israel ; the Arab participants threatened to boycott the event for political reasons.
- Countries that do not have a Mediterranean coast and still participate are Andorra , Macedonia , San Marino and Serbia .
Known tournament winners
The most famous tournament winners so far include the Olympic champion and two-time world champion in super heavyweight Roberto Cammarelle (he won the Mediterranean Games three times: 2005, 2009 and 2013), the later professional European champion and WBC mandatory heavyweight challenger Željko Mavrović , the amateur world champion in super heavyweight 1999 Sinan Şamil Sam , the 2002 Olympic third in super heavyweight Paolo Vidoz , the later WBC cruiserweight world champion Giacobbe Fragomeni , the amateur world champion and three-time European champion Ramaz Paliani and the two-time amateur world champion and Olympic runner-up Clemente Russo (who won the Mediterranean Games three times : 2005 and 2009).
