history

The band formed in 1994 and soon thereafter recorded two demos that were sent to various music labels . After only rejections came back, the band members rented a minibus and toured the USA. During the several years of vagabond life, they recorded further demos and earned a small fan base. The EPs This Crying This Screaming, My Voice is Being Born and Consider were recorded during this time and sold in very small numbers. Thus, of My Voice Is Being Born This Crying, This Screaming, produced only 700 copies, of which again only 250 a booklet had. The low success forced the band to record The Day the Sun Went Out for only US $ 1,200 .

After a first European tour, they recorded After the Eulogy , which made their breakthrough. The band was still only known to a small scene, but it now spanned almost the entire world. boysetsfire played sold out concerts in the US and Germany . Commercial success came in 2003 with the album Tomorrow Come Today , which was released on Wind-Up Records . Boysetsfire made extensive tours through Europe and played at major festivals such as Lollapalooza .

Shortly after the album was released, bassist Rob Avery left the band and was replaced by Robert Ehrenbrand, who had previously played with the German hardcore band My Hero Died Today .

When they recorded the follow-up to Tomorrow Come Today in 2004 , there were differences of opinion with the record company, as they feared that the new songs would not be suitable for radio and the group wanted to have a co-songwriter aside. The band separated from the label and toured the USA and Europe for a long time.

In September 2005 the band found a new home at Equal Vision Records (for the USA) and Burning Heart Records (for the rest of the world). On February 24, 2006, her fourth album The Misery Index: Notes from the Plague Years was released in Germany.

On October 18, 2005, the debut album The Day the Sun Went Out was released again on Equal Vision Records / Burning Heart Records. On November 1, 2005, a compilation called Before the Eulogy was released , which contains B-sides, singles and rarities.

On June 7, 2006, the album The Misery Index was released in Japan via Solitary Man Records , and in July it was announced that the band would split up.

Shortly afterwards, it was announced on the band's homepage that guitarist Joshua Latshaw had been seriously injured in an accident at a construction site (broken neck, two broken cervical vertebrae and a collapsed lung). The European tour continued with a replacement guitarist. The band's farewell concert in the USA, which had been planned before the accident, was then postponed.

In May 2007 the band toured Europe for the last time. The two farewell concerts took place on June 8th and 9th at the Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia, PA and marked the temporary end of the band's career. The entire farewell tour was accompanied by a film team. A DVD with the Philadelphie concert on June 9, 2007 was released on September 30, 2009 under the title "Farewell Show", while a planned DVD with recordings of the European tour is still pending.

In early 2007, singer Nathan Gray and guitarist Joshua Latshaw formed the band The Casting Out . Joshua Latshaw dropped out shortly afterwards due to health problems. At the end of 2007 the temporary end of this volume was announced in favor of other projects.

Boysetsfire announced their reunion on October 5th, 2010 on their Facebook page. The first concert after the reunion took place on December 5, 2010 as part of the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds in Berlin. A multi-week tour through Europe followed in the summer of 2011. On August 28, 2011, they announced on their Facebook page that they would start recording a new album after their tour.

On November 28, 2011 Boysetsfire announced the departure of their bassist Robert Ehrenbrand. He was succeeded by Marc Krupanski, the brother of the drummer Matt Krupanski. In December 2012 Boysetsfire announced that Matt and Marc Krupanski would be leaving the band. It was also announced that Robert Ehrenbrand has withdrawn his departure and will from now on share the role of electric bass player with newcomer Chris Rakus. As another new member, Dan Pelic was introduced on drums.

On June 7, 2013 the album While a Nation Sleeps… was released. In autumn 2014 Boysetsfire toured Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Leipzig and Vienna on the occasion of their 20th band anniversary. On this tour, the band played on three consecutive days in every city, except Leipzig, the three albums After the Eulogy , Tommorrow Come Today and The Misery Index from start to finish.

On August 21, 2015, the Family First Festival , organized by boysetsfire, took place in Cologne , where they performed with their friends and artists / bands Chuck Ragan , Funeral for a Friend , Adam Angst and War On Women . The self-titled album boysetsfire was released on September 25, 2015 . A twelve-day European tour with Silverstein , Great Collapse and Templeton Pek followed in October .

In March 2016, the band announced via Facebook that they would take a break after the shows in the summer of that year. In autumn 2017, Boysetsfire announced a new edition of the Family First Festival in Cologne for February 2018 via Facebook . The band arranged for this, among others, Dave Home & The Mermaid, Fjort , Great Collapse and Coldburn.

Five concerts in Germany and Austria have been announced for November and December 2019 on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

Band name

The band changed the spelling of their band name several times from Boy Sets Fire to BoySetsFire to boysetsfire . In 2013, the spelling on the album cover was also BOYSETSFIRE . The name is based on the novel "The Boy Who Set the Fire" by Mohammed Mrabet and translates as "The boy who set the fire".
