Braunschweig 1899, southern urban area: In the far west, the ring track comes as a black, wide, curved line from the north over the Westbahnhof with a branch to the Luther works , turns north to the head station on the Oker, with the Wilke-Werke , Karges & Hammer , the Braunschweigische Maschinenbauanstalt , the Gas-Anstalt and other plants happened. Heading south from the station again, the track passes in a wide arc u. a. the Wolters and Feldschlößchen breweries and the Büssing-Werke , until it finally reaches the Max Jüdel & Co railway signal construction company and the Ostbahnhof , on the premises of which the Braunschweig main station is now located. The timeline begins at the Westbahnhof, follows the route, omits the (terminus) station, touches the eastern arch and ends at the repair shop, built in the 20th century, southeast of the Ostbahnhof.

The Braunschweiger ZeitSchiene is an open-air museum in Braunschweig , which presents numerous aspects from 175 years of Braunschweig and German transport and economic history using the example of the railway history of the city of Braunschweig. The beginnings of the project go back to 2004. It was designed in more detail on the occasion of the award of the title “ City of Science 2007 ” to Braunschweig. The "Braunschweiger ZeitSchiene" was opened on April 13, 2008.

The "ZeitSchiene" runs as a public footpath and bike path over a 5.5 kilometer stretch through the western and southeastern urban area along the " Ringgleis ". This is a railway line planned in 1865 as a "belt railway" to connect local industrial companies, which since 2003 has been converted into a pedestrian and cycle path.

The “ZeitSchiene” is divided into numerous “stations” that depict historical events in Germany and Braunschweig. It is about contemporary history as well as economic and railway history. So-called " decade stones " divide the route into specific time segments. The first decade stone stands at the Westbahnhof for the year 1838, when the first German state railway, the Duke Braunschweigische Staatseisenbahn , started its operation between the old Braunschweig railway station (the terminus in the adjacent map) and Wolfenbüttel . Others stand for 1848, the year of the 48 revolution , for 1853, when the Friedrich Seele & Co. company was founded, from which the Braunschweigische Maschinenbauanstalt (BMA) emerged in 1870 ; 1873: Heinrich Büssing's "Signalbauanstalt" merged with the "Eisenbahnsignal-Bauanstalt Max Jüdel & Co.", the forerunner of today's Siemens factory in Braunschweig . Other stations provide information on local traffic history, such as B. the opening of the Braunschweig-Schöninger Railway in 1898 or the production of the first trucks by the Büssing company in 1903, and one year later the world's first omnibus line was opened between Braunschweig and Wendeburg . 1927: Opening of the Reichsbahn repair shop in Braunschweig , one of the most modern and largest of its time. 1938: Construction of the so-called " Vorwerk Braunschweig ". 1944: Destruction of the Braunschweig train station during the Second World War and 1960 opening of the newly built Braunschweig main train station . 1998: Commissioning of the Weddeler Loop . The journey through time is to end after 175 or 180 years in 2013 or 2018 in the future forum “Quo vadis” and there give popular scientific outlooks into the future of rail transport from the perspective of science, research and development.

Further planning

So far, the museum route is around three kilometers long and ends at the Echobrücke at the Kennelbad. On September 8, 2019, the time markers 1928 to 1957 were officially inaugurated. For the next few years, full expansion is planned up to the Borsigstrasse locomotive park, where the Braunschweig Railway Museum is located.
