Breitenberg (Schafberg Group)

The Breitenberg is a 1412  m above sea level. A. high summit between Attersee and Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut , on the border between Upper Austria and Salzburg .

Location and landscape

The Breitenberg is located between the Unterburgau in the south of the Attersee region and the Wolfgang / Ischl valley . It connects the Schafberg massif to the west and the Leonsberg massif (Zimnitz) to the east, whereby orographically it is included in the second. The mountains belong to the Schafberg group of the Salzkammergut Mountains , respectively partly to the Salzburg Pre-Alps , partly to the Trauntal Alps . The Breitenberg forms the municipal boundary of Sankt Gilgen, which belongs to Salzburg , and Sankt Wolfgang in Upper Austria , and thus also the state border. The eastern part of St. Wolfgang here is Wolfgangthal .

The Breitenberg is the highest elevation of the saddle between Schafberg ( 1762  m above sea level ) and Leonsberg / Zimnitz ( 1745  m above sea level ). To the southwest lies the Schwarzensee at 716  m above sea level. A. , and north of it the Moosalm with the saddle height 772  m above sea level. A. on its northern edge. To the southeast is the Haleswiessee depression at 786  m above sea level. A. , and north of the Fachbergsattel with 897  m above sea level. A. Moosbach / Schwarzenbach and Rußbach drain to Ischl to around 570  m above sea level. A. In between, the Breitenbergbach (Breitenberggraben) runs westwards to the Moosalm and separates the Hoheneck ( 1165  m above sea level ) as a foothill from the Breitenberg, to the south the Lugberg  ( 916  m above sea level ) forms a valley shoulder of the Wolfgang / Ischl valley. To the north go the moat from the Moosalm near Burgbachau and the Loidlbach from the Fachbergsattel over the Burgaubach near Burgau to the Attersee ( 469  m above sea level ). The eastward running Lasseralmbach separates the Auberg  ( 907  m above sea level ) directly on the Attersee. All of these streams form deep trenches, especially the gorge of the lower Schwarzenbach and the Burggrabenklamm . The Haleswiessee is a hydrographic specialty, it is located in a karst polje , a basin without drainage on the surface, and drains underground to the Weißenbachtal .

The Breitenberg itself is wooded and forms a flat ridge about 1½ kilometers long west-east, divided by the Breitenbergbach south and Klausgraben north. On the southwest flank is the St. Wolfgang Breitenbergalm, at the northeast end of the mountain is the Burgauer Meisterebenalm.

Geology and nature

The space between Schafberg and Leonsberg is a depression milled out by the Wolfgangsee glacier in its branch of the Atterseegletscher .

At the level of Sheep Mountain - and Vormaueralm as well as the summit plain of Spitzeck, courtyard wall and width mountain on to 1300- 1400  m above sea level. A. , is probably the oldest valley floor in the area. The Breitenberg itself will have been just on the border of the maximum glaciation. The Strubeck – Lugberg – Gartenwand mountain range to the south, at around 800–900  m above sea level. A. , probably represents a younger valley floor level in the Wolfgangsee area.

The train of the Ager – Ischl watershed is the Hirlatz formation , that of the Schwarzensee basin and the Haleswiessenke plate limestone .

The mountain is part of the Schafberg – Salzkammergutseen landscape protection area  (LSG 46) on the Salzburg side . Schwarzensee and Moosalm are nature reserves .

history

The area between Mondseeland , Attergau , Wolfgangland and Ischlland has been unclear since Duke Odilo's donations to the Mondsee monastery and the diocese of Salzburg in 748, but was controversial for centuries because of the important pilgrimage to St. Wolfgang . The exact boundaries were only set with an Austrian - Salzburg State Treaty between Emperor Leopold I and Prince Archbishop Thun on May 26, 1689. In terms of traffic, Burgau forms a Salzburg exclave on Mondsee and Attersee, while Wolfgangland remained in Upper Austria.

Paths and huts

The hiking trail to the Breitenberg comes up from Burgau am Attersee or Weißenbach - Waldsiedlung , and branches off from the path to the Fachbergsattel. Some forest roads run along the mountainside from the south and the east. A forest path runs over the summit ridge, but it offers a good view of the areas currently cleared. A particularly attractive vantage point is the Atterseeblick above the Meisterebenalm.

The Meisterebenalm is now a private self-catering hut.
