Along with Lützel-Wiebelsbach , Haingrund , Rimhorn and Seckmauern, Breitenbrunn is one of the five districts of the municipality of Lützelbach in the Odenwald district in southern Hesse .

geography

The small town is surrounded by wooded heights of the Odenwald , in the south of the municipality of Lützelbach in the basin of the upper Breitenbach , which flows to the north at Rai-Breitenbach the Mümling . The district is between 220 and 420 meters high.

On the southern hill - at the foot of which the Breitenbrunn volunteer fire brigade has built its fire station - there is a small settlement. The hill was originally forested, the settlement was only created after it was cleared. The local waterworks is located on the small road that connects the settlement with the village .

Further south of the hamlet “ Hengmantel ” is a former ammunition depot of the US Army in the forest on a country road. Four wind turbines are in operation here today , two were built in early 2005 and two more in March 2009.

The elevation north-west of the hamlet " Hengmantel " (field name: "Im unter Bildacker", position at about 49 ° 45'33.4 "N 9 ° 03'54.9" E ) is the only place from which both the Breuberg Castle, about 7 km away (direction of view: north-north-west), and the Otzberg fortress about 14 km away (direction of view: north-west) can be seen with the naked eye at the same time.

climate

Breitenbrunn is located in a temperate climate zone. The temperature rarely drops below −10 ° C. In summer the temperature can rise to over 30 ° C. In August 2003 the temperature rose to a record 37 ° C.

history

A Roman fort of the Odenwald Limes , which runs here and was built to protect the Roman Empire from attacks by the Teutons , stood on a hill southeast of the valley basin in which the present town is located .

In 1273 Marquard von Rosenbach sold extensive goods, including an estate at “Breidenbrunen” to the Höchst monastery . From this one can conclude that the place was first mentioned in the 13th century. The roots of the district probably go back even further into the past. Breitenbrunn belonged to the lordship of Breuberg until 1806 and then fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

After the Second World War, three suspected members of the NSDAP were shot by US soldiers in Breitenbrunn . The US wanted to break up the party through these measures, which were carried out across the country.

On February 1, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, voluntary integration into the municipality of Lützel-Wiebelsbach took place, which in turn became part of the municipality of Lützelwiebelsbach on August 1, 1972 , which was renamed Lützelbach on July 1, 1973 . For Breitenbrunn, as for every district of the newly created community, a local district was formed with a local advisory board and local councilor .

Culture and sights

The district has a listed Protestant church and a village community center, which was built in 1783 instead of an older fortified church .

There is the Breitenbrunn Singing and Sports Association in the village, which is divided into a sports and a singing section. The club's football department plays its home games on the “sports field on Weidenstrasse”, which is located above the valley. The dance section, divided into age groups, practices a dance for the Breitenbrunn curb every year . There is also a traffic and beautification association, the Breitenbrunn volunteer fire brigade and the Breitenbrunn folk musicians. A small parade on Mardi Gras followed by a celebration in the village community center is also common .

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

Various small shops and handicraft businesses are located in the village. There is a lack of larger commercial establishments. Breitenbrunn has intensive agriculture in which both cattle breeding and arable farming are carried out. The area around the village is therefore characterized by pastures and arable land.

traffic

Breitenbrunn is connected to the regional road network via the L 3106 state road. It connects Breitenbrunn to the west with the neighboring town of Rimhorn and to the east with the Vielbrunn airfield and the neighboring district of Haingrund . There is also an asphalt Wirtschaftsweg , the width Brunn through a forest with Luetzel-Wiebelsbach connects.
